I have just installed a new copy of Mass Effect (1) and immedately upon attempting to play or configure the "Mass Effect Configuration Launcher" stops working and must be forcibly shut down. I have unnstalled and reinstalled and the same thing happens repeatedly with no solution offered on how to fix it.

My laptop's specs are more than capable of running the game on recommended settings, the only problem I can think of is running on Windows 7 64-bit edition.

Is there a way I can finally get this game to run or do I have to insist on a refund for faulty software? (Sorry if that sounds aggressive but I'm rather ticked that after all the homework I've done on this game it still, somehow, fails at the most basic function of being playable.)

Thanks.

Sorry, but you overlooked the facts.  Relax now, the error was yours, not Bioware's.  There is ZERO official support from any 3d PC game developer for any laptop, same now as always, because they are generally very poor platforms for displaying games properly (98% of all sold), and the developers don't want to spend the exorbitant time required to filter out all but that tiny fraction.  It's on the game box, an on the digital download retailers' download page.

"RECOMMENDED
ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT, or better, recommended
NOTES: For the best results, make sure you have the latest drivers for your video and audio cards. Laptop or mobile versions of the above supported video cards have not had extensive testing and may have driver or other performance issues. As such, they are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2Intel  and S3 video devices are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2."

You need one of those very RARE >2% laptops.

No where on any of the documentation that came with this copy of the game does it say anything about the game not being able to run on laptops. Perhaps if there had been some notice of this I wouldn't have wasted my money on a game I can't actually play. Perhaps as well, BioWare could be honest enough with their customers to actually alert us to this neglect before we spend money on their faulty products.

Thanks anyway.

That's not the point. The point is that laptops aren't supported whether they can run it or not. This is mentioned literally on the back of the box, at least on the Flemish version. Translated:

"Laptop versions of these chipsets may work, but are not supported."

It also says you need a graphics card and technically laptop graphics are not cards.

But post your system specs anyway. Maybe your hardware should be able to run it anyway and the problem is caused by something else.

I had the same problem with the just installed game, but after I updated it (to version 1.01a or 1.02, I can't remember now) it runs ok. For me it was with a desktop system running vista 64-bit OS.

Try the patches from here: http://masseffect.bi...ates/index.html

The part of the requirements that I quoted and underlined also appears in the README file, although formatted differently:

"NOTES: For the best results, make sure you have the latest drivers
for your video and audio cards.

Laptop or mobile versions of the above supported video cards
have not had extensive testing and may have driver or other
performance issues. As such, they are not officially supported
       in Mass Effect 2.

Intel and S3 video cards are not officially supported in
       Mass Effect 2."

Anyone expecting anything significantly different from any developrs regarding laptops simply is inadequately informed about PCs and PC hardware.  (You can probably blame 90% of the bad laptop video on Intel, particularly. )

As Fredvdp says, newer laptops with actual GPUs should be able to run ME2. (But as Gorath says, an Intel graphics chip will simply not work.) Post your specs if you want further advice.

In my computer (4 cpu, win7 64bit) the Mass Effect configure did not work before I installed the patch 1.01. There was fix for it, of cause I did also install patch 1.02.

Is your PC also a laptop model?  (Or is your comment applicable because of the low quality video device that you are using without current complaint?)   In other words, it would be nice to understand why what you wrote was pertinent to this thread's context.

In orginal post the player sayed that game doesn't work because the ME configuration did not work. That's exactly what happen to me. Is the PC laptop or not, is irrelevant. My suggestion was about asking OP put the patch in. It may fix the problem, like it did for me. There was allready same kind of post for Vista 64bit, so it can also happen with Win7 64bit.

I don't know why are judging my comment?

PS: My computer is not laptop.
