After arriving at Denerim for the final battle, I work my way through first the Markets, killing the General there, then making my way to the Alienage, again slaying the General and clearing all the darkspawn. After finishing this, no exit to the map appears, IE the streets that SHOULD take me back to the map so I can continue the story are now invisible walls, trapping me in the Alienage perminantly with no way to continue.

The Alienage's General came across a bridge to reach you. Did you alrady cross that bridge after the game registered that you killed him? (That would be when he becomes lootable.) If you tried crossing the bridge to no avail...
Spoilers: Did the Archdemon blow a hole in the bridge? I believe there's a bug where you can trap yourself by somehow not crossing the bridge when the Archdemon blows it up during a cutscene, forcing a reload. I'm not 100% sure though.

Yes I was trying both exits, it eventually clicked, after running back and forth for about 45 minutes AFTER the General became lootable
