Sudden Video Problem

I've played all the way to Vermire, but when I was talking to the Salarian captain the picture started cutting out. The sound would keep going, but I couldn't see anything. At first, the picture would come back and I would be able to play a little more, but then it went away in the middle of a battle and I had to close the program with control-alt-delete. Now when I run the game, the last thing I see is the splash dialogue box. After that, sound keeps on going but video is completely absent.

This is very sudden, and crazy that the problem persists even after I power the computer down. Can anyone help me?

My CPU is an Intel Core 2 Quad, and my Graphics Card is Nvidia GeForce 8600. I've updated the video driver just in case that was the problem, but the current driver on the Nvidia website is the same one I had installed already.

If the video card has developed a defect or perhaps been damaged by overheating, drivers won't be able to repair the damage.  What other tests have you made?  Did you run the full suite that DxDiag suggests?  What temperatures is it reaching?

how to read video card temperatures

"About 13,400,000 results (0.45 seconds)"

No difficulty with that!

I just ran through all the DxDiag tests, and they didn't detect any problems. I have no idea how to check the card's temperature, though.

Ok, according to Geek3D GPU Caps Viewer, GPU1 is running at 52 degrees C and the other three are cold (zero). Does that tell you the card temp too? It looks like it. Most of the info returned is about the video card, and part of that info says it's associated with 1 GPU--presumably the one running a temperature.

52 C doesn't sound too hot. That's only about 125 F.
