Reasons *TO* Install Patch 1.03

So, the patch notes on 1.03 seem promising, particularly the part about addressing bugs for the expansion which I'm going to buy after I finish a replay. On the other hand, there seem to be >100pgs of posts detailing some pretty serious, even crippling, bugs with 1.03. Obviously that makes me leery of downloading and installing the patch, since the setup I had before when I was playing, the one I've still got, worked pretty well as far as I remember (it's been a couple of months at least since I played it last).
And since there are so many score pages of posts to wade through, I was a bit daunted. Thought I'd just ask my question directly and hope for a simple, easy-to-find answer. Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere.

Stick with 1.02a if you ask me and don't buy the expansion or more DLC.

It fixes the stealing bug introduced in 1.03, which was the most annoying bug for me.

No, but the setup will install patch 1.03, because it is needed for Awakening.Turin_4 wrote...
Can I take that to mean that if I wanted to play Awakening, the pros of installing would outweigh the cons?

That was going to be my next question-are there workarounds available for the bugs 1.03 introduces? It looks like there are. As someone who uses it, would you mind being my couple-of-questions guineapig? Does the fixpack deal with any of the other bugs 1.03 introduces?

From what I've read of the changelog in Qwinns fix pack, it does fix most of the gameplay issues outlined here. However, it does not fix the instability issues that are present in 1.03. While these are not reported by every one, in fact some people have no problems at all, a lot of people have serious crashing issues.
Therefore you run the risk of making your game unstable even with the fix pack. As was stated earlier, unless you have Awakenings, there's virtually no reason to install 1.03. Maybe for the slow load times bug fix but some people even report that doesn't work as advertised.

I suggest you get to a point in DA:O where you are ready to walk away from the game for months on end waiting for a patch to fix the patch!

Playing the Mac version seems pointless and frustrating.

1.00-1.01: crashed a bit around Lothering but otherwise stable.
1.02a: has not crashed yet (~30 hours).
1.03: was relatively stable (5-10 crashes during first 10 hours), then started crashing 10+ times an hour in The Fade. 2 Mages in group.
ME2: stable, other than the occasional CTD in the galaxy map.
E8400
Asus P5Q-Pro
4gb DDR800 (only 3.25gb available)
Radeon 5850 (cat 10.2 official)
Aug'09 DX9 build
I honestly don't think OS will make much of a difference, in your shoes I would probably go with win7, unless you already have a copy of XP kicking around.

is it safe to say that XP is the best OS to use with DA, currently?
Most of my games run on XP and I'm a happy camper. However, with DA 1.03 its a really different matter. Gameplay wise it is stable on my XP rig but NEVER FORGETS TO CRASH specially when AOE spells are used. Also that 1.03 pest NEVER FAILS TO DROP MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF FPS during and after combat.

Install 1.03 if something requires it. IE Awakenings or some DLC. Or as a last resort if you have 1.02a and it crashs a lot with nothing fixing it, then try 1.03.
^Done.
Otherwise No from me.

Bottom line..If you install 1.03 (which is required for anything after Return to Ostegar) then you will most likely have problems. The only question if whether the problems will be so great that the entire game will be unplayable. The chances of constant game crashing increases dramatically if you are using an OS newer that WindowsXP.
I suggest you get to a point in DA:O where you are ready to walk away from the game for months on end waiting for a patch to fix the patch!
If you install 1.03 standalone and then Awakening on top of that, your game will crash. In my case, I installed Awakening on fresh DA:O installation (patch 1 .03 is implemented in Awakening installator). Effect? Game runs perfectly. In my opinion, the lazyness of Bioware programmers causes the problem, coz it seems that Awekning installator does not recognize corecty if patch 1.03 is already installed or not, and it apllies the patch once more, on already patched game, which causes crashes. This is my suspicion. Sorry for my english, I hope you manage to understand something. :]
