Most of the pc gamers I know have bought games through steam, $100-300 worth and in some cases $1000-2000 worth of games. These don't factor in at all do they? Many pc gamers haven't touched a retail (physical copy) in years.

For another side to the piracy argument, this blog post really sums things up quite nicely.

I buy all my games digitally now..have done so since I discovered  that it was possible.   Now all I need to do is get rid of all the game boxes cluttering up my computer room...from games I no longer am interested in.  hehe

With Direct-to-Drive..they store a copy of your purchase on their site, and you can download it again whenever.   I have a long list of games stored there.

As for those sorts of retailers...seems to me that they don't give out figures publically on their sales, so that wouldn't be counted in the total.   Or at least thats what I read somewhere.

Until consoles start releasing games like Baldurs Gate and offing games like Halo I have no interest in them.

Not a fanboy in any regard, but Halo 1 and 2 probably did more for the FPS market than they get credit for, especially in regards to consoles.

No, you're thinking of Dark Alliance. Different games, same setting.

There actually was a PS1 version of the original Baldur's Gate that was never released. It was finished and, I assume, going through the QA phase when the project was halted in either '99 or 2000. But yes, BioWare's RPGs never made it to console. A shame, really.

@ svenus97: Where are the numbers of pirated games you posted from? To be honest I doubt such numbers can be accurate; most downloads are from Rapidshare and noone keeps track of them because noone at Rapidshare knows the files are there - if they did, they´d remove them.

What about the free games for the PC, like Battlefield Heroes, the only part that needs purchasing is all the extra weapons, emotes, extra clothing, and widgets. Then there is the Facebook rubbish (I have dumped the games for about 6 months now since I got tired of the repetition and progress requires money), all of these product generate revenue.

The ideal is to use both, IMO. At least one PC (whatever the OS) is likely to be a permanent resident in many households for sometime to come and most modern PC hardware has the grunt to run many games. Consoles are like blackboxes and we have a number of these sitting on top of the HDR.

Sometimes I have the living room full of my daughter and her mates having a blast on Rock Band, while I can play DAO on my PC, with a comfy PC chair.

When I get my living room back, I can chill in less work-like surroundings and play on the XBox.

We have 3 XBoxes and we are constantly swapping hard drives so that we can can go and chill in whatever room we want.

Then there is my lad's PSP which gets passed around.

It is all game tech. It is all good. Looking forward to what is gonna happen next.

That is from more then one source, I googled Most pirated games 2009 and I lookes at 5-6 links and all had the same numbers, with MW2 having over 4 million pirated versions.
