EA has announced its earnings for Q4 2010:

http://www.gamespot....=topstory;title

Apparently, according to EA's executives, Mass Effect sold only 1.6 million units out of 2 million units shipped.

In comparison, games like Battlefield Bad Company 2 sold over 5 million units, while FIFA World Cup 2010 sold over 2 million copies. Additionally, it's important to note that these two titles have been on the shelves for less time than ME2 was on the shelf, and they still sold more copies than ME2!

Astounding. ME2 is easily the best game I have played so far this year, and while I liked BFBC2 a lot myself, I am surprised that ME2 hasn't sold as well as I thought it did.

Thoughts?

Perhaps the market for first person shooters is comparatively larger than for RPGs?

Shooters and sports titles sell better than RPG's

I hope you're all prepared to be disappointed by ME3 because EA isn't gonna give the dev team limitless money to wrap things up with.

agreed. Over long term, ME2 will gain more while the FPS will slowly start to decline in buyers.

FIFA is the best sports game in quite sometime and BC2 is the favorite game of everyone person who hates the mw2 craze but likes shooters.

where mass effect as centered around a personal experience with your character, npcs and no one else.

I never played BC2 and i love me some FIFA but I'll take mass effect over both all day.

its just like mainstream hip hop, everyone loves the drakes and kid cudi's but the guys with depth, substance and creativity to their lyrics only get noticed in the blogosphere.

They don't need limitless money, they just need to play it smart and they can do it. It isn't rocket science on how they can incorporate everyone/everything into ME3. Alot of the things that the characters/squadmates have encountered with the exception of an few have to deal with the main plot line in some way.

Tali - Quarian fleet/Dark Energy (pretty much main plot)

Legion - Quarian/Geth tied with Tali.

Garrus - is wrapped up.

Zaeed - side mission to finish off Vido if you haven't killed him already.

Samara - wrapped up.
Morinith - wrapped up.

Kasumi - Greybox could lead to an side mission about it, or just something you can black mail the alliance with to help you in an certain situation. Or leads to an side mission where someone tries to assassinate Kasumi and company etc.

Thane - assuming he lives in ME3, all wrapped up with occisional mentions of his son.

Miranda + Jacob - Tied to an cerbersus side mission to deal with TIM.

Ashley/Kaiden - Side mission

Mordin + Wrex + Grunt - Side mission/main storyline to deal with the genophage.

Jack - wrapped up.

1.6 million people have played ME2, that's a LOT of people. Just because it isn't owned by everyone on the planet doesn't mean it's something to worry about.

RPGs have always been a lower selling market as well. Mass Effect will continue to sell steady slower sales for months to come.

Shooters/Sports Games sell everything at once as people all want to get on the multiplayer while that title is hot. When a new shooter/sports game comes out, they all flock to the next new one. Dont expect Bad Company/World Cup to really sell much more after the next month or two.

RPGs have a follow up loved only by its fans, while shooters and sports games continue to gain a fanbase.

Um...the article was praising ME2 as one of the reasons EA was able to prevent total melt down and made a billion dollars in revenue last quarter.  And it sold 1.6 million copies in North America and Europe and 2 million world wide, not that it shipped 2 million and only sold 1.6.  The EA executives said that was a highlight, something that exceeded their sales projections.

Read the article again.  That was a good result for Bioware and that title.  Money was made, executives are happy.

An article calling ME2 a 'top performer' seems an odd one to cite to show that ME2 did not sell well.

Multiplayer games: Need game to join with friends/rivals online, who will also have their own copies.

Singleplayer games: Buy one, share with friends/family when finished. Free DLC is nice incentive to buy the game new, but many people are fine playing the game without the DLC.

So, this is not surprising at all.

Edit: Also, "sold only 1.6 million copies." Sold only 1.6 million copies? Really, that's awesome, woohoo BW! And more and more are selling, my sister's fiancee wants to buy it after trying out my copy, so there is one more.

Might want to try a less pessimistic article:

http://www.google.co...7nPRAQD9FKSO1G0

Video game publisher Electronic Arts Inc. said Tuesday that strong sales of games such as "Battlefield: Bad Company 2" and "Mass Effect 2" gave the company a quarterly profit above expectations. But its outlook fell short of Wall Street's forecast, and its shares slumped in after-hours trading.

Mass Effect 2 helped lift Electronic Arts out of the red after posting losses for 3 straight years. So technically speaking, Electronic Arts has been in financial trouble ever since Mass Effect 2 started development. That may be a good or bad thing depending on how you view Mass Effect 2.

Not only does EA value profits, but critical acclaim as well. Their executives brag in their financial quarter reviews about the 96 that Mass Effect 2 has on MetaCritic.

BioWare doesn't have a cash cow like Valve (Steam) or Blizzard-Activision (World of Warcraft) do, but they're still able to produce quality RPGs in a very short amount of time compared to the latter two. However, this might change if Star Wars: The Old Republic becomes a viable competitor to World of Warcraft. If not, then BioWare in Austin, Texas (not Edmonton, Canada) dies.

There's really nothing to worry about.

COO John Schappert

This is honestly quite depressing. Even Dragon Age sold 3.2 million copies, according to an early Feb 2010 announcement. Dragon Age was released in Nov 2009.

Just to put it into perspective here's a link to the sales charts for RPGs on the 360 vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php, that is not counting the PC sales, which are much harder to measure.

That depends on whether the sales for Mass Effect 2 include third-party digital distribution (Direct2Drive, Steam, etc.) for PC games. I'm inclined to believe that many more people used digital distribution to buy Mass Effect 2 than Dragon Age, even though both games use standard disc checks instead of DRM.

Also, Dragon Age was released on two consoles and the PC, while Mass Effect is exclusive to one console and the PC.

Interesting and I was kind of concerned when it barely sold ~850K in the first 2 months on X360 according to NPD sales data. They did a fairly strong marketing blitz with the TV ads that probably cost a good bit of $$. I'm sure they made a profit but those are not blockbuster sales for a game with the production values and quality of ME2.

I don't imagine that the budget for ME3 is going to exceed what was available for ME2. This would likely mean cameo roles and emails for the ME2 squad in ME3. It's a shame that they couldn't at least match the sales for DA:O. I guess the shooter crowd is more fickle than they expected or they overestimated the appeal of wacky sidekicks in skintight spandex. Even the Halo kiddies can recognize pandering when they're smacked in the face with it.

Fine, fine. B)

They'll have snipers outside, anyway.
