Mass Effect sold 2.2 million copies just on the 360. Just to put things into perspective, I don't see ME2 catching up.
Mass Effect sold ~1.35 million copies on the console in its first 10 weeks (PC version wasn't released until months later).
Mass Effect 2 sold ~1.65 million copies on the console in its first 10 weeks (PC version was released concurrently with console version)..
Also, the DLC pipeline in Mass Effect 2 is bringing in far more
revenue than Mass Effect 1 ever could
People who bought Mass Effect 2 and didn't purchase Mass Effect might do so later on. This is why I don't believe it will catch in sales.
As I mentioned above, that's assuming that there are more people who bought Mass Effect 1 and then never bothered to purchase Mass Effect 2. That doesn't look good for Mass Effect 1 or the trilogy in general.
And as far as DLC goes, yeah, that's a typical EA move making people pay for content that was already created when the game launched. EA is screwing over the used game market with what they are doing in regards to online activation for sports games. It's really no surprise that DLC will bring in money.
The content wasn't already created before the game launched, there simply wasn't any time or resources to finish it by the release date. Just ask any of the BioWare developers on the forum - they have a dedicated DLC team that started work right after the game went gold.
Sure, EA might have set the release date a bit early, but what's wrong with getting a game much earlier when it's practically complete? It's a lot better than waiting months and months just to include every bit of content possible and also better than never seeing the content at all.
