Well, this is what happen when you strip rpg elements from an rpg. This is what happens when you "casualize" a game trying to sell it to a wider audience. The wider audience buy other games and fans stop buying the game casue they feel betrayed. This is an importan t lesson for bioware and they should think at what they are doing with dragon age 2......

This is dissapointing for an sequel where a lot of fans preordered the game. And this is also the reason Mass Effect 2 has this little advantage.

The little advantage of being released a month after holiday season, whereas Mass Effect 1 and Dragon Age were released right before holiday season?

So what are you guys trying to get at telling us it only sold 1.6 million copies instead of over 9MILLION!!!1!!!!!11!1!one?

That EA is going to decide "no Mass Effect 3 for u, not profitable"?

Just trying to say that subvertomg a blockbuster's gameplay to catch more buyers  is not a good idea....not always however... remember a lot of post of david gaider about how many forumite whine about things that the silent majority like...a lot of post about fear of innovation of a "minority" .
And now that the majority gave it preference to dragon age and its "laundry list" model of dialogue??? what are they going to do?
However i liked me2, it'a good game in its genre...that is not rpg genre....IMHO...

Oh please.

Dragon Age came out on 3 platforms, Mass Effect came out on 2 - also Dragon Age was released THREE months prior to Mass Effect.

No one knew if Mass Effect was going to be good. Holiday seasons or not. Anyway, the sales are not stellar even for an rpg. People should look at the sales of Fable,Fallout 3 or Oblivion.

Amazing how people ignore the facts and continue to spin anything that is said.

ME2 doesn't sell well: That's because they're not appealing to the RPG fans!
ME2 sells well: That's because they're appealing to the dumb masses!
ME2 sells the same as ME1: That's because their appealing to the masses didn't work!

Pokémon - console based RPG - sales of 20+ million for the first game alone (almost ten times that of Mass Effect 1).

Coincidentally (or not), that game has far more "RPG elements" than Mass Effect ever had.

Just talking about FACTS
http://investor.ea.c...eleaseid=443674

Pretty sure that EA ceo knows a lot more than VG charts....

This is conference call date :EDMONTON, Canada, Feb 08, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE)
three months after dragon age was released (first days of november) so we are comparing the two games on three month basis.
Obviiously EA data were based on dragon age sales TILL 08.feb.2010

And where is the comparison of Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 in the same time-frame, accounting for the FACT that Dragon Age was permitted to be released on 3 consoles rather than 2?

In comparison, games like Battlefield Bad Company 2 sold over 5 million units, while FIFA World Cup 2010 sold over 2 million copies.

Thoughts?

Both games genres are more popular then RPGs, both have multiplayer and both have older and bigger fan-base.

let me see if i get this right, it only sold 1,600,000 right? at about £25 a pop on the conservative side (or $25 for u yanks) that makes a turnover of £$40,000,000? and thats bad? and add to that the sales of the pc version and it's not as bad as ppl make out.

i'm defanatly in the wrong job.

edit.
ok call it £$50 and the total is now £$80,000,000

[color=white]Still didn't answer my question - what were the sales of Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 within the same exact time-frame for a single console?

The lack of literacy and objectivity on this forum is absolutely amazing.

Ecael, they can't very well bring those figures up - now can they? They won't have an argument otherwise.

I just can't handle the ammount of BS. Sometimes I just don't know even where to begin, I get pissed, so I prefer to not start a discussion. It's good that some people care and I like to help when I think it's convenient.

LOL this thread still kicking?

Okay let's compare. Let's take the vaunted Metal Gear Series as example, arguably one of the most popular game series, and also M-Rated like Mass Effect. Guess how much Metal Gear games sell on the Playstations. Each of the Metal Gear Solid games has sold around roughly 4-5 million copies.

So the Mass Effect games are failure because they sell only around 2 million copies on the Xbox 360? Are you kidding me? That's pretty damn good for a game series that just came out this generation and is an RPG of all things. Sure it's not the 6 million or whatever "Camp of Duty" and Halo sell on the Xbox, but come on.

At this point seeing as how ME2 has sold 1.6-1.7 million copies on the Xbox 360 in just a few months, I think it's safe to say that ME2 is going to eventually outsell ME1. Remember ME1 has been out for 2-3 years. ME2 still has a way to go. If I was a Dev I'd say ME2 was a success and an improvement over ME1 on the basis of sales.

Since when 1.6 million is "only"?! I am the only one so old here to remember the days when such numbers were considered an astronomical success? Better don't answer me, though...

Still, it's a very good figure. Especially if it's only for the XBox 360. How much games sell today, aside from the overrated, teen-obsessing shooters ala "Call of Duty"?
