Why wasn't default female Shepard's appearance based on anyone?

Image Comparison: ui23.gamespot.com/2166/ewwwtf_2.jpg (Don't know how to put images on this forum. If someone could help me out, that would be most appreciated)
My question is, why wasn't this done for the default female Shepard, "Jane" Shepard as well? When compared side by side with John Shepard, you can see how much detail and care was put into his face, while Jane just doesn't look like the same amount of effort was place into the design at all. I mean just look at this picture and see what I'm talking about. John has more texture to his face, and a whole lot more detail than Jane:

Now I understand that the reason for this was probably for marketing purposes - Since John Shepard is seen on all of the covers and art work., but I still don't understand why Jane couldn't have been based off of a model as well?
I also understand I'm probably going to get a lot of these, "You get to create your own character. Who cares what the defaults look like?" And yes, I understand that quite clearly. I'm just saying that it's weird that John was modeled after someone and Jane wasn't.

Default Femshep should be based off the beautiful Jennifer Hale, which by coincidence, is her voice actress
If anyone, that's who I'd like to see. It would only be fitting.

When you first select default appearance in the face generator, she looks like she might have been based on a real person. Then in game she looks generic. I agree with op. Fem shep gets the shaft yet again.
Pun intended?

She does get one of the more impressive voice actrors in the series though. Jennifer Hale is without a doubt one of my favorite VAs out there. I agree with HBC Dresden in saying that Fem shep should have been modeled after her.

I also support Hale as the model since I think the original femshep default model is based on Hale (if not based on her, still sort of looks like her)

That was the problem. There probably wasn't enough time to put detail and care into two default faces (not to mention making the lip-syncing and everything working better with the default faces), so they went with a canon male protagonist in Mass Effect 1.Mafiaman32693 wrote...

Because they're carrying over all the details, they have to keep the character creator generated Jane Shepard face when importing into Mass Effect 2.

I do agree MaleShep just looks overall better.

Really, this dissapoints me. Hale is one of the best in the business, and thanks to Bioware's marketing, completely obscure. She deserves more credit for her work in ME2, and ME3 should have a better face generator all around, especially for femshep.

I was hoping for this in Mass Effect 2, but no such luck. What a shame too since they gave us the perfect opprotunity story wise to get some new features to tweek. I'm hoping at least they can fix the hair problem by the time ME3 comes out. Vandershep (or Sheparloo, what ever you want to call him) is the only one who doesn't get plastic looking hair, so us custom male sheps feel the same way about it as you ladies do. Unfortunatetly I'm a console gamer, so I don't get access to the awesome mods you PC gamers get.

I agree that it would have been nice for Jane to have a better face based off of someone, but not Hale. I don't like her VA either. I don't particualy care for either VA actually.

Dragon Age has a far superior character creator, but it doesn't have a voiced main character.slimgrin wrote...

Mass Effect's character creators are extremely limited because of the glitching that already occurs with a limited customized face. That's why some things like Lip Width are absent - they'd have to repeatedly test every possible combination of faces just to get Shepard's lip-syncs and emotions (or lack thereof) working properly.
Even Dragon Age has head/face glitches sometimes...

This. ^
For such a dialogue-driven game, the main protagonist VAs were both... underpar IMO. Maybe it's because I didn't particularly "like" the way either actor portrayed Shepard; Hale sounded forced, while Meer lacked subtlety.
I would like a REAL face for my femShep, though.

I felt bad for laughing at some (apparently) serious dialog on my MaleShep, the way it was voiced.
One of the funniest lines is also one of the creepiest line in the game: "Sounds dangerous... and lonely."
I was waiting for the music to change to "Bow chika-wow-wow" right as that line finished.

The generic face is just another example of how much of an afterthought FemShep is. It's really a shame, but what can you do?

Oh, interesting stuff Echael. I didn't know that lip-syncing problems could be influenced by this. Very informative, kudos for you.Ecael wrote...

Whatever! That line was great. Default Shepard became my role model after I heard that line.
As for female Shepard, they are already to the 3rd game, it is a little too late to create an original female Shepard. People can follow the original Shepard because he is now a familiar icon through 2 games. Add a chick and everyone will be like "who is this girl on the cover and how do I get Shepard to bang her?" or worse, nobody will play her because she is not how they envisioned the female Shepard. It is a lose-lose situation. Unless they get someone really hot.
