1.6 million is... pretty good. Not as good as Bad Company 2 / Borderlands though.

But that's the thing, gaming media and other info places said that's how much it sold within 2 week... unless not a single person bought ME2 after those 1st 2 weeks? lol

Not in the article, I'm saying back then after 2 weeks when ME2 came out, they had announced it sold about 1.6 million. which was almost 3 months ago

I read this same exact news on G4TV's website. One guy who commented on there brought a good point that ME2 only came out for PC and X360 where as something like BFBC2 came out on those two platforms in addition to the PS3 which is a possibility on why ME2 "only" sold 1.6 million up to this point.

I think there was another topic about this. But as I said, damn the sales, full steam ahead!

Like the comment above, you have to take into consideration the platforms that the game is sold on.
Also there are no where near as much PC gamers as much as there are Xbox gamers.
Then you have to take into consideration how many actually "gamers" there are compared to people who just have an Xbox 360 and don't play it as much
Then you also have to take into consideration how many people that play RPG's which narrows it down a lot more
Then take into account how many people wouldn't buy Mass Effect because it wasn't "RPG enough."
You can draw more variables into it, like how many people have PC's that can handle actually games, but 1.6 Million is pretty impressive for any Microsoft exclusive title.

Mass Effect 2 sold 1.6 million copies, digital + retail, NA + EU.

Scientists have catalogued approximately 1.6 million species on our planet.

Coincidence? I think not!

After the first two weeks I'm pretty sure sales dwindle for most products... which means total sales aren't much higher than earlier figures. It's like a storm but with the quiet part coming after, not before.

Yeah but usually that 'storm' can go on for 4-6 weeks.

We know nothing about the sales on Steam so I think we can conclude that ME2 sold at least 2 million copies.

It depends on the game. Games that don't get much hype but are good games get slow sales to start off but as word of mouth spreads the game experiences some spiking every few weeks for months.
Games that everybody knows about usually get the majority of their sales in the first month or so.

I guess a better metric would be how many units has ME2 sold compared to ME1 after a similar period of time. Also, based on current trends, is it projected to come close to the original?

I would suspect that ME2 probably started stronger than ME1 because of the fanbase but might come in slightly under compared to the original because not everyone who picked up the original would have liked it and thus would not pick up te second one, especially given how linked the two games are in terms of story.

If ME2 comes close to ME1, that sounds like a WIN to me. If it exceeds it, that would be incredible.

Let's keep in mind that new customers who bought ME2 might also have bought ME1 afterward if they were happy with their purchase and wanted more. So those 1.6 million copies probably earned Bioware at least a few hundred thousand more.

God damn shame. More people need to play, no scratch that, experience Mass Effect 1 and 2.

You either love or hate Bioware games, there is no "meh" factor. A good friend of mine that typically plays all the same games I do hated both Mass Effect and Dragon Age. He hated the gameplay (action) elements of the titles.

1.6 million are amazing numbers, especially for a story based singleplayer game. breaking that 7th digit is nothing to sneeze at.

Unless the PS3 version of BFBC2 sold some 3+ million copies, your argument is invalid.

I blame the simultaneous launch on the PC

A sports game selling more than a RPG? NO WAI.

it's still alot of ****ing money. $60 x 1.6 million = 96 million dollars. 1.6 million is practically 2 million rounded off into a whole number.

Well the fact that most PC users buy games from steam, we can safely assume that ME 2 sold more than 2 million copies.

I personally like having the boxed version... too bad they ruined the CE with that ugly cover of the metal box....
