Gah, at this rate in ten years gaming will be reduced to two blockbuster stupid shooters and a bunch of obscure (even if great) independent games per year, a whole lot of kids, pre-teens and teens, bashing the controls and drooling over the "lolz, l33t xshot" ...

As for FIFA'10... man, I got over the stupidity of buying sports games each year a decade ago.

1,6 million is still a great number, even though I'm positive it's more. Not only for Steam, but all of those statistics are based on US and Western Europe (italic deliberate). I bet no one bothers to check the market in Eastern Europe, Russia and former SU republics and some of Asian states. It may be far smaller than US/wealthier part of the EU, but I'm sure there are decent sales there too. So, 2+ million is more likely..

I hope BioWare decide it's not worth it to tackle the massive shooters and reintroduce some RPG into ME3. :)

Weird. What about the 2 million in first two weeks? If that's the actual numbers (vgchartz 360 numbers?) it's disappointing.

Not even to EA? :o

EA knows how many games are sold... plain and simple.  To know how many games have arrived in the hands of a customer (like you and I) they can count the number of games registered (the fastest most direct way... but not everyone does it).  Also, every time a game is bought online or in a store... the checkout process stores this info to a database (this is why a store knows how many copies of a game they have, and what store it is in).  Alternativly, EA would know how many copies of a game have been shipped (i.e. bought by stores), and would know when a certain store/chain orders more copies (implying that all copies were sold previously).

They regulate how many copies of the game are printed and distributed.  When a game is sold digitally (no box or CD), they record that too.

Why is it 100% essential that all of this sales data is present?  Because it is needed by both the stores, and EA for accounting purposes.

What about the 2 million?  Copies shipped (bought by stores), not sold to actual customers. It is possible that this number was estimated/inflated for reasons of hype.  Hype sells games.

1.6 million copies sold likley represents actual copies sold to date.  If the number were actually higher... EA would be the first to say it (hype sells games), as those numbers would add to their yearly/quarterly financial numbers... which is the bottom line as far as EA goes, especially given their rough past few years.

You do know that article is horribly maintained. They are not tracking sales per game and updating. Most of the older games still have references with sale figures  from 2 years ago.

EA sales figures reported for quartly/annual results... vs post release hype articles all quoting each other as sources.

Take a guess which numbers are correct.

Well you have to consider that some PC gamers pirate games. Not to mention that ME2 was released for only the PC and Xbox 360. Plus, RPG games usually don't sell as highly as other game genres. Still, 1.6 million copies is a large amount.

Yes all that is in consideration when EA actually says the number of sold products.
You seem to imply that those considerations; being only on PC and 360, PC pirating(there is also 360 pirating), and being an RPG only applies to ME2.

1.6 million is not a bad number, it is just not the number the hype machine was pushing weeks ago.

Well it's pretty obvious that RPGs in general aren't the most famous games compared to other genres such as sports games and FPSs.

You have more companies making RPGs then sports games. It is easier for sports game to get market share when that genre is damn near a monopoly.

There are only 4-5 shooters that hit crazy numbers like 5+ million and there are a few other games hitting numbers like that too.

1.6 million in sales is strong for any game.

So let me get that right 1.6 million = Fail 2 + million = Huge success how this affect us as gamers? E.A better go straiten someone else me2 will get there in the next quarter.

The problem lies in they're own budget -700 mil. last year .

My guess is that EA isn't really thilled with the number since they failed to mention it in their press release of Q4 earnings. The Q3 stated that Mass Effect 2 looked like the first blockbuster of 2010 and no mention of sales in Q4? The 1.6 million figure for Europe and North America boxed and digital downloads was only given in the conference call. They did mention the Metacritic rating but not the sales. The fact that Battlefield Bad Company 2 outsold ME2 more than 3:1 leaves me a bit discouraged about the future of single player games.

That's how much the game sold in 2 months. It came out at the end of January and the fiscal quarter was over at the end of March. So 1.6 mill in 2 months.

Sell 2 million in Jan / Feb / March quarter, then 1.6 million in the next quarter (April, May, June).  Putting the actual sales figures up around 3.6 million as it stands?

That makes a lot more sense and seems a much more realistic number.

The only fail here is your lack of proper sentence structure and punctuation.

Unlikely, look here:

The executive team noted that Mass Effect 2 has sold through more than 1.6 million units through both retail and digital means in Europe and North America.

To me that says, ME 2 has indeed sold around 1.6 million copies so far.

Except that you need to keep in mind that the sales given were to date tallies not a quarterly breakdown. Well unless you think Bad Company sold 5 million copies in 3 months and FIFA sold 10 million in the same time frame.

I don't know how someone could get that incorrect.

That would be a good theory.. except that the 1.6 million in sales were reported by EA to have occured to date.  The April-June 1st results have not been reported... because we are still in... May.

I looked it over the internet on google and all news on sites were telling it was 2 million copies SOLD, not shipped, they were clearling saying sold copies, that's why I think it's all weird.

That is one of the wonders of reporting. They could mean sold to supplier, which would mean the 1.6 mil sold statement make sense.

Or they could mean sold to customers, which would make someone a liar after reading EAs report.

Looking at the facts we have, it sold 1.6 mill on 360 and PC in 2 months, in Jan-March, an extremely slow time for game sales.

So, it's a success.
