I had forgot about the "assemble Cailan's armor" quest in Ostagar.
While I went to Flemeth's place to whack her I was in the neighborhood so I went to Ostagar next to retrieve the pieces.

I was already in Juggernaut Armor and other tier 7 pieces as well but when I looted the Cailan pieces they were all tier 5 (red). What a dissappointment.
I've seen others mention that they have the tier 7 version of the pieces. Why did I get tier 5 then?
Can they be upgraded? If so, how?

In the meantime they collect dust in the party cache up in the soldier's peak.

I am using PC version 1.03.

I'm running PC 1.03 myself, and I find that selling each piece to the Dryden smith at Soldier's Peak, then exiting the merchant menu tends to upgrade his inventory based on the level of yourself and your active party members. Speak to him again and buy back each piece that is at the tier you want. If some haven't upgraded, close it out and repeat. I suggest removing your party when you visit, or only using party members of the same or higher level.

It can cost a good bit of gold, but it's worth it to go from Red Steel to Dragonbone. Also, Dryden tends to give you access to higher tiers earlier than other merchants. You can buy dragonbone equipment long before it starts dropping from mobs.

I've confirmed this works on Cailan's armor set and shield and Maric's Blade. It also works for WC items like the Warden Commander armor set, Asturian's Might (maxes at Silverite), and all non-fixed-tier items from the vanilla campaign. Certain uniques like Helm of Honnleath, Juggernaut Armor, etc. cannot be upgraded in this manner.

Thanks, I'll try that.

You need to be level 19, I believe, for items to upgrade to tier 7.

It worked like a charm.

At first I could not upgrade Maric's sword but it turned out that I had forgot to remove the attached runes before selling it to the smith.

If you want to save money, put them in your storage chest, leave then come back and they should be tier 7:)

I don't think the storage chest upgrade works on the PC. I tried that, it did nothing. So, as the earlier poster advised, I sold it to Dryden and then rebought it (Warden Commander Armor and Cailan's armor), and it was now dragonbone.

Did the item set bonus stick around? Last time I "upgraded" Cailan's armor, the item set properties on the gloves disappeared.

That happens to me sometimes. You just remove 1 piece and put it back on.That usually works.

Dryden will also upgrade certain weapons also as I found out a few moments ago.

I think getting certain items (including Cailan's Armor) at T5 instead of T7 is intentional, to allow even a higher-level character a chance to choose to wear them without maxing out strength.

Statements above about the party chest upgrade working on consoles and not PC, and that the most reliable/cheapest way to upgrade on PC is to sell to the one of the Drydens, are all correct in my experience. I tried selling some things to the merchant with the lowest multiplier in the game (the one off the Orzammar Commons) in an effort to save some gold, and 10 levels later the materials were unchanged.

No, I don't mean I lost the bonus.  I mean the property si actually gone.  I checked in a mod that allows you to alter properties of items (Winter Forge).

Doesn't matter much now.  I deleted the save in question some time ago.

I do it at level 12.  It takes several times of exiting conversation wit the smith and asking to see his wares again, but ALL Warden's Keep and Return to Ostagar pieces can be Dragonbone at lvl 12.

And if you have the cash to do it at lvl 12 . . . holy cow the game is different.  Your plate wearers are wrecking machines.

Also - check out the fatigue with Cailan's full gear including sword and shield.  Spells/Abilities usage is like wearing leather - very good set of armor.

It's gotta be the Smith at Warden's Keep on PC.

Yeah, I found that out later and having a level 12 warrior with AC 39 is indeed game-changing!

BTW - Either Dryden will upgrade gear and Levi resells at a lower mark-up, even though it's Mikhael who says he is offering a discount.  Rule of thumb, it seems - be wary of any merchant who says that.

I thought Cailan's Armor and the Warden commander Armor would appear as already leveled up if you looted them at a high level.

They do. However, some people prefer to do the DLC as early as possible. This method allows the DLC armor to be used throughout the game, instead of forcing you to choose between the protection of vanilla items and the bonuses of the DLC items.

swk3000 has caught the correct.

I don't mind paying to upgrade to Dragon Bone at lvl 12.  I typically give Cailan's gear to Alistair because, after all, it's the king's gear.  In this case I keep Cailan's armor teir 5 awhile longer until Alistair grows into it.  Usually I give Cailan's armor to Sten until Alistair's strength = 36.  Then I give it to Alistair and I keep it teir 5 until Al's strength gets up to 42.

Note:  Cailan's sword has no strength requirement.  You can have strength = 1 and use it.  So that always gets bumped up to teir 7 right away for me.

I only ever bump Alistair's Strength up to 32. After that, there's enough equipment to get his Strength up to 42 easily.

Actually, Maric's Sword has only ever been tier 7 when I got it once. In every other playthrough, it's been tier 5 and I've had to do the sell/buyback trick to level it up to 7. If I hadn't gotten it at tier 7 that once, I'd have thought it was always supposed to be tier 5 when you get it (or maybe it is and that one time was actually a glitch!) I don't think level has anything to do with why it's acting that way in my case: I always do RtO either just before or just after the Landsmeet, so I've always been over level 19 when I've gotten it.
