The Last town on earth by Thomas Mullen.

Set against the backdrop of one of the most virulent epidemics that America ever experienced–the 1918 flu epidemic–Thomas Mullen’s powerful, sweeping first novel is a tale of morality in a time of upheaval.

Deep in the mist-shrouded forests of the Pacific Northwest is a small mill town called Commonwealth, conceived as a haven for workers weary of exploitation. For Philip Worthy, the adopted son of the town’s founder, it is a haven in another sense–as the first place in his life he’s had a loving family to call his own.

And yet, the ideals that define this outpost are being threatened from all sides. A world war is raging, and with the fear of spies rampant, the loyalty of all Americans is coming under scrutiny. Meanwhile, another shadow has fallen across the region in the form of a deadly illness striking down vast swaths of surrounding communities.

When Commonwealth votes to quarantine itself against contagion, guards are posted at the single road leading in and out of town, and Philip Worthy is among them. He will be unlucky enough to be on duty when a cold, hungry, tired–and apparently ill–soldier presents himself at the town’s doorstep begging for sanctuary. The encounter that ensues, and the shots that are fired, will have deafening reverberations throughout Commonwealth, escalating until every human value–love, patriotism, community, family, friendship–not to mention the town’s very survival, is imperiled.

Inspired by a little-known historical footnote regarding towns that quarantined themselves during the 1918 epidemic, The Last Town on Earth is a remarkably moving and accomplished debut.

The Hobbit. I regret not reading this when I was younger. I wasn't sure about it earlier on but I'm near the end now and have to say the story gets much more exciting in the last third of the book. I'm now very excited about the movies.

I just finished the Elder Scrolls spinoff novels, and now I'm starting The Dwarves by Markus Heitz.  German fantasy writer.  The story seems pretty Tolkienesque, if Tolkien ever set novels in his dwarven kingdoms.  A dwarven kingdom is being besieged at the same time by a mysterious plague and by orcs and other creatures who are taking advantage of the weakness.

SHORT STORIES BY ROALD DAHL. LIKED HIS CHILDREN'S BOOKS WHEN I WAS A KID, STILL LIKE HIS TWISTED SENSE OF HUMOR NOW THAT I'M READING HIS MORE ADULT-ORIENTED STUFF. AFTER THAT, BACK TO THE ILIAD, PROBABLY.

I'm curious, how would you feel if they made a film adaptation of "Charlie and The Great Glass Elevator"? They've done two film adaptations of "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory", but never its sequel.

SEEMS LIKE IT COULD MAKE A GOOD MOVIE. DAHL'S WRITING IN GENERAL (AT LEAST IN HIS CHILDREN'S NOVELS) SEEMS TO LEND ITSELF PRETTY WELL TO FILM DUE TO THE STRAIGHTFORWARD NATURE OF THE STORIES - THE TRICK SEEMS MOSTLY TO BE TO HAVE CINEMATOGRAPHY AND EFFECTS THAT CAN KEEP UP THE END THAT WOULD NORMALLY BE KEPT UP BY HIS PROSE.

Why are you shouting?  lol

I love Roald Dahl's short stories.  I have Skin and Tales of the Unexpected.  I also have an anthology of ghost stories that he edited.

Just finished The Lonely Polygamist by Brady Udall, great book. He vividly creates a world that I wouldn't want to be a part of and never would've given a second thought to otherwise, and makes it utterly fascinating. He made me really care about the characters and swept me into their struggles with laughs along the way. The historical details are really interesting too.

Also recently finished No Sleep Til Wonderland by Paul Tremblay. If you're a fan of first-person narration it's one to check out. The main character (a narcoleptic private detective) is definitely my favorite narrator in a long time.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is good too if you want a book to geek out over. Soo many references...

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

It's my favorite, never gets old, it's always fun and no matter how many times I read it (and I've read it countless times) I always enjoy it more than the last time.

Just finished the Parker series by Richard Stark (Donald Westlake). Am now reading The Irish Americans.

It's a nice change of pace to not have a body count on every page.

Still working on Game of Thrones. I've owned the first book for a year, and I'm right around the first half.
I'm also re-reading and proofreading what may possibly be the most insane thing to come out of my mind to date, up to and including ponyscape.

Still on Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Gosh its been 10 months since I posted on this thread? Someone warned me not to read Mostly Harmless but I'm going to ignore that. 2 chapters in and its decent so far.
But my ADD wont let me stick to just one book so been going through the Harry Potter series again and I've just started Order of the Phoenix. And I just fnished the 4th Labrynth Uncharted book.
If I can find it I'll start Icarus Effect Deus Ex Human Revolution book.
