How about Lois McMaster Bujold? The Miles Vorkosigan books are excellent sf and the Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls are top notch fantasy.

Not having read Carroll I'm not in a position to comment. I think it lives up to the Noon vision. Does that help?
