A direct continuation of the story with my characters would be nice, after Awakenings, to get the full experience of my characters. Also have party memebers available from both Origins and Awakenings, to continue their storylines. Then go further into detail about the child with Morrigan.
That would be the most ideal set up possible. The choices from both origins and awakening being used and trhe characters who aren't dead of king joining you in some new possible morrigan child related event. The problem is it would take a decent amount of time and effort to create. And it seems that the developer want to get a sequel out quickly. Especially after the downgraded conversation system in awakening.
In regards to characters coming back I think from awakening anders was the only one who could likely to return. And from origins Alistair would have to in most cases be a story character but not party member, wyne would not likely return, and shale may ----------or something similar but everyone else varies and could potentially return. it would be nice to do this but I also wonder if we have that many characters would we also get new ones? Could people from origins be put through the joining? There's a lot of opportunities in revisiting the original group but as I said because of time and costs I don't see it happening, awesome though it would be.
sorry i tried to edit out the minor spoliers

I hate letting go of Oghren, Shale, Alistair and all the rest (did I mention Alistair and also, Alistair?), and while the idea of new characters and a new setting make me want to jerk my arms like an angry toddler, if it's done well the next DA story could be a chance to fall in love all over again.

While I appreciate the sentiment, what you're asking is "do you want to continue the character you're already emotionally invested in or opt for the unknown?" Since the unknown could be anything and has no associations (beyond abandoning the known) I think most people are going to see it as a net negative-- so it's not really a fair comparison unless you have some idea what the alternatives might actually end up being.
That said, there are definite positives and negatives on both sides. Poll away!
Well, abandoning something that already has a playerbase emotionally invested seems like a pretty glaring negative straight away. Don't get me wrong, love you to death Gaider (FOR...NOW), but I think it's pretty fair to measure up. You either can take a character you had friends, enemies, loves, betrayals, wars, campfire songs, and enchantment (enchantment!) or trade it for a blank slate with none of this.
This is ok for some people, not ok for others. I personally always vote (or try to voice) for the middle ground of 'Can't we both have our way?'. Continue if you want to, make a new personage if not. I mean, we all know there is going to be a new character option in the game no matter what BW decides on importing or not; Don't be foolish, they won't force you to buy another game, play it, and then import to buy the new sequel. Nobodies character is going to start at level 40 with full bars, hundreds of gold, and three hundred epic items stashed around various boxes. It will have stand alone support no matter what. No, the choice is do you want to start with history, or start with none.
I can see how they both are tempting, I hope we both get our wishes. (Especially me.

Edit : But I love the dragon age universe so much that I don't think I would care either way.

I want Shale and Justice in DA2.
Why? Because assuming more than 50 years passes between games, Shale and Justice are the only two that can be justified to be alive. Maybe an Elf would still be alive after those years, but I don't think they would be fit for combat.
I would like to see Shale in Dwarven form and Justice in spectral Form. A change from their previous incarnation. It would give returning players a new perspective on these characters.

That's 70 hours. Not including Darkspawn Chronicles, and it doesn't seem as if Bioware have finished supporting the game with additional DLC.
I think that we've had more than enough time with our characters, and wouldn't mind something new for Dragon Age 2. The Warden has made his mark, though another Awakening expansion would be great.

We need a 3rd option.. For those of us that may be fine with either
scenario.
follow so many endings? Realistically, I do not see us picking up were
we left off. Or we would be waiting another 7 years for DA2 to come out,
just to write in all possible endings. Nearly every companion, and even
Alistair was able to die in DAO.. I had to vote for a new character. If
for no other reason, logic......
There is a time to let go. I am hoping DA2 gives us as much enjoyment as DAO did. Looking forward to the new experience!

That is, unless story choices were to carry through to the next game, making it a significantly better experience for carried-over characters. . . but again, I don't think a direct sequel is a good idea. Time to move on and expose another part of that universe.
On the story-side, I'm pretty bored with being the figurehead for the ubermensch, which is the same problem I've had with the majority of BioWare's games (still love them but. . .) - being a Jedi, being a Spectre, being a Grey Warden, is all pretty much the same and completely removes me from the rest of the conflict. It takes away anything my character has in common with the people he's saving, and encourages me to be a total dick to them. Because as far as the game sees, and as far as I'm expected to see, I'm meant to worship my character, as so is everyone else. It's also highly individualistic and undermines the idea of "team play" if the game ever went MMO. Because as far as everyone's concerned, the game makes them the bee's knees.
I would rather play an ordinary man who has risen to greatness through tactics, politics and strife than be mentally/cybernetically/blood. . .ly. . . enhanced and waltz through situations that would kill an ordinary man right out. Also makes the story much more human and relatable!
So yus. Another, more down-to-earth and realistic character please, on whom the FATE OF THE WHOLE WORLD does not rest. Maybe start off as a lowly farmholder in Orlais, starting a revolution and rising to lead it? Start as the leader of the Antivan Crows, who is ambushed in a political coup, and thrown on the next boat to Par Vollen? Start as a politician in a Tevinter province, forced to take up arms against the invading Qunari?
my two cents ^^

I want both if possible. I really liked the import of my character into awakening and also the option of creating a new one. What I want most of all is my character that I'm emotionally attached too.
This.
Ofc there's going to be the option of creating a new character like in Awakening, but that doesn't mean we can't also have the option of importing our old Warden.
