Hello.

I'm working on a short story featuring an original character, set in Nos Astra. I want it to be consistent with any number of possible play experiences that people may have had during Mass Effect 2. The story skirts around the events of Shepard's visit, with specific reference to the siege on the Eclipse base (where Shepard goes to obtain the name of the ship that Morinth left on, as part of recruiting Samara).

Trouble is, I've since realised that it is entirely possible for people to play Mass Effect 2 without recruiting Samara, and thus never storming the Eclipse base. See here social.bioware.com/forum/Mass-Effect/Mass-Effect-2-Official-Campaign-Quests-and-Storylines-Spoilers-Warning/Do-I-have-to-recruit-everyone-916716-1.html

The story could be changed to accommodate players who never recruited Samara, but then another thought dawned on me, which has greater repercussions for my story: does Shepard have to visit Illium at all? In other words, can the game be completed without recruiting Samara and Thane, without doing Miranda's loyalty mission, and without doing any of the other subquests, e.g. Liara's hacking missions etc? I don't have the free time to try all possible permutations (much as I’d like to), so I'm hoping the community can shed some light on this.

Thanks for any help.

It is actually possible to complete the game without ever hitting Illium. To do so, you'd have to do side missions (of the N7 variety) until the Illusive Man contacts you for the Disabled Collector Ship mission. Once that's done, you automatically get the Reaper IFF mission.

In fact, if you pull it off right, you should be able to complete the game without picking up Tali, either. If the 8 member thing is correct, then you'd have to have both Zaeed and Kasumi to do (to allow the Disabled Collector Vessel mission to actually trigger), but it should be able to be done. I know I had the Disabled Collector Vessel mission trigger before picking up anyone from the second round of dossiers. I did that by doing only Storyline missions (Get Mordin, Get Garrus, Get Grunt, Get Jack, Horizon), then doing all the side missions I'd picked up after Horizon was done. I was just getting ready to pick up Tali when the Illusive Man called.

Thanks for the quick reply. Looks like time for a re-write. I was trying to get close to Shepard with an original story, without revealing anything that a player may not have done in the game. Of course, it's safer to avoid Shepard completely, as with the official novels/comics. Thanks again.

Thanks for your interest in the story. It's not finished yet, and will need a slight rethink in certain areas, due to Shepard not necessarily visiting Illium. I hope to have it done soon, since it’s also something I want to add to my portfolio as part of applying for the Writer vacancy at BioWare Edmonton.

What I can tell you is that the story is called Nos Astra Nights, it’s set in (surprisingly) Nos Astra during the events of Mass Effect 2, and the main protagonist is an original asari character called Tirahin. It will be made available in three parts, each approx. 2,000 words in length. The first part is called Resolution.

I would be very grateful for community feedback once the story is live, to see if people like it, and to catch any continuity errors that I may have missed in my research. I’ve also had to make a few assumptions, since there are certain things about Nos Astra, and Illium in general, which aren’t documented – I’d like to know how they sit with the community.

I’ll be sure to PM you once the first part is live, and will post a link in the relevant forums.

Tim
