Stick to the ranch for a few Bonnie quests and get your lasso, partner.

Does anyone else see how that is just terrible design? Allow you to catch the first guy by doing one thing, then telling you to do it again, but this time the method you were taught does not work and there is no indication anywhere of how the new system works. Even replacing capture the target with lasso the target once or twice would do some good, at least you would know what you're missing, even if you didn't know how to get it. At the moment it's just a source of confusion and agitation. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if some people didn't go back to her for some time after that terrible herding mission.

I will complete this game, there is enough that I enjoy to keep me going, but I don't feel compelled to make time to play, which I did at times for GTA 4. For every agitating aspect there is something I enjoy, I just wish the balance was more in RDR's favor. Also, for the people that pre-ordered the game from Gamestop, what is up with the American Appetites quests? I was expecting to get my outfit immediately, but great, some extra quests, I'll take them. Really? Two parts of the quest require I go to the same spot, inspect some bones and return having found absolutely nothing. Is my game bugged? Why would anyone design these quests? Are they some sort of joke about the inane tasks we'll do for loot?

Okay, I think I'm done. Will update if more ranting is required.

I think one of the Marshal's missions tells you about using the lasso to capture and hogtie, but that isn't until a little while into the game. I'm not sure whether it says to use the lasso on the screen if you don't have it yet, but all the bounty side-missions I've done have made note to use the lasso to take them alive when you get near to the bounty target. Over-all, I don't think you should get too upset over killing a bounty or two, the positive honor points and money you didn't get from that bounty are incredibly easy to make-up for.

I played through some multiplayer last night, both free roam and matches.

The free roam is definitely a disappointment from what I was expecting. Nearly all of the NPCs that make the world feel alive are completely gone. You can't do any of the cool mini games like poker with people online. I really wanted to play Hold'em with my buddies. There are no quests whatsoever. I was expecting there to be no main storyline quests but there is nothing at all. No random encounters or strangers with missions. All that there was to do it seems are a handful of bandit hideouts and some hunting grounds. I'm eagerly awaiting the free DLC they've announced that has a half dozen multiplayer quests.

The match games were good and about what I expected. I love the Mexican standoff in the beginning. It's fairly traditional death match, capture the flag..err gold, and team vs. I only played a handful of rounds but it seems fairly solid. I like the level up system and the various unlockables. My favorite moment was when I climbed up to the top of the church and had a bird's eye view of the town. I was able to pluck off several enemy before they even realized where I was.

All-in-all, I think I'll play more single player and hope that they can patch up Free Roam multiplayer to be more worthwhile.

Lasso them and hogtie them.  Throw them on your horse and take them to the sheriff.

From a purely business sense, it's genius. You watch the forums to see what people REALLY want, and then you make some it a simple patch (trains, mini-games, people), and some of it costs money (more skins, co-op missions). That way you get people who are like, "Oh, you're so generous!" while you're actually still charging money for something.

Of course, this is all purely hypothetical. I have no idea if Rock* is actually planning on doing something like this.

Well, try playing exclusively with your real friends. I've been doing that every night since Monday and it's a freaking blast playing free roam. Yeah, there's not much to do other than do a few bandit hideouts, hunt around and complete some objectives, and try to kill as many lawmen as possible without dying but there are some many random, hilarious things you can do. Most of the fun we've had was just getting into fist fights and stuff. I imagine it'll get old somewhat quickly so I definitely can see where they've set the stage for multiple multiplayer DLC. But, I'm starting to expect that these days.

Just got my lasso and lassoing seems to be another mechanic designed so poorly it seems like it was some magnet high school's game design class project, but I digress. I found when doing the American Appetite's quest that I can hogtie enemies, do I have to do that for the bounties, or just lasso them and move so slowly that time travels backwards to avoid them breaking free?

Unfortunately I'm trying to play a good guy (bad idea) but that sounds like a great idea if I can tolerate playing this game twice.

Wow, that was interesting. Apparently I rotated the wrong way while aiming, so I feel off the train. So I whistle for my horse to catch up to it and see if I can jump on. While I'm trying to do that, a guy off the side of the road randomly shoots at me. I wait a little bit to see if he was just shooting at a bird, but no, he takes another shot at me, so I return fire and kill him, -100 honor. Alright then, I guess at least I can loot his body, but while I'm doing that, my horse runs off a cliff its death.

I think at this point I just continue to play this game out of masochism, it really is the sort of thing that should be being sold for $5 in a bin at Wal-Mart.

Edit: Oh, and I forgot, the only reason I was on the train in the first place was because I have to do the task to kill 5 birds on a moving train. I had done this previously, but I was standing on top of the train while doing so, and apparently the game does not consider being on top of a train being on it.

Damn, I think you got a version of the game when it was still in beta, because it is supposed to count the bird kills on a moving train if you're on top of it. That's how I completed that sharpshooter challenge

That's what it feels like, a game made by skilled and experienced developers that has received litle to no testing. Well, maybe my beta disc will be worth some money someday.

@Goro: Yeah, herding sucks, and unfrotunately you have to do it more than once.

I have unlocked the suit that lets you cheat at poker though, so that's been fun. Unfortunately because you're dealing with AI, they occasionally have annoying tendencies. One guy will fold to any raise, so getting any money from him takes an eternity, and another is a big better that always seems to have a hand, so it's hard to avoid getting bullied out of hands.

I think you may have some terrible luck friend I still have that stallion (from the Bonnie mission) and Im close to beating it and every time my horse get near a cliff the horse kicks out and turns away so you never charge off. By the way were you bad at all or did something to ****** off the man that shot at you this has never happened to me without a good reason.( Maybe he thought you were robbing the trainImage IPB)

Yeah, it's funny that the horse won't tend to want to jump down 5 feet, but in that one moment just decided that it could handle a 200 ft drop. Just one of the fun anomalies of RDR. As for the guy that shot at me, I had no bounty, I was at max honor, and I was just riding next to the train, not in any position to rob it, and then I just clamly roade away and he continued to shoot at me. Good to hear most people seem to have better luck, but this has to be one of the least polished games I've played since KotOR 2.

Have any of you been able to do anything with the Treasure Hunter challenge? I just don't think finding the right big rock or group of cacti over the entire area of the giant map is all that feasible.

So answers/thoughts to my questions would be greatly appreciated. I really want to love this game, but I really wanted to love AC, and then AC2 and simply didn't. AC to me was like playing the worlds greatest tech demo, and AC2 while a vast improvement still was far to static in its storytelling for my taste and felt too much like I was playing a video game.

Off-Topic: Ehh, AC2 has open world elements I wouldn't call it a sandbox. It tells the story of one person and that's Ezio Auditoire de Farinze. Personally, I loved Assassin's Creed 2 a lot, but if you're thinking of pro open world sandbox games, I wouldn't look at that game if I were you. Just think of it like a platformer.

On-Topic: I honestly like the characters in this game better than most of the ones I've seen so far in Dragon Age: Origins. I know people that said that this game is not as "story-oriented" but I think they're wrong. This is my opinion of course, but I think that RDR is more genuine and real than both Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

I got the next level mount (real sickly looking horse) around level 5-7.
