I just installed Mass Effect2 and my  virus software says there is a trojan called Artemis!A28E044828BC . It's located at  C:\\programfiles\\masseffect2\\binaries\\keygen.exe. Do anyone else have this?

Hmmm....that does look suspicious although I doubt that came from the actual game. I've installed ME2 a couple times already and have never had this problem. I'll probably have to look at my game's directory to see if there's a file called that. I could see why it would be marked as a trojan though.

Have you got a legitimate copy of Mass Effect 2? This looks like a pirated copy.

Pirated software tends to bite.

Congrats on posting about it to the developers' forum.

There is no legal copy of Mass Effect 1 or 2 that comes with a keygen.exe. This is probably a illegal copy made by a third party.

Let me guess:

1. It's only one DVD and the movies look like crap.

2. You can't register the game on Bioware since the CD key is generated and invalid.

3. You don't have a Cerberus Network key.

All these three are signs that you own a illegal copy of the game. Report the seller and get your money back.

Ouch, my sympathies on getting fleeced by the seller. Indeed, report him. Also, wouldn't hurt to run a full virus scan of your system to be sure. And if you want to be doubly sure, run another anti-malware program like Malware Bytes for a "second opinion" to make sure nothing was missed.

Sorry about the snide remark. But frankly, this is obviously not a legitimate copy if it comes with an executable called "keygen." The whole point of the key DRM system is to force you to get a physical copy of the code - it isn't going to be shipped as bytes, especially an executable to generate them on demand, onboard the discs with all the rest of the game data.

Sounds like a cheap homemade bootleg version. I'd report the seller on ebay for scam.

True , there is no Cerberus Network Key,but the CD key is auto generated. The movies and the game graphics are superb. The disc is just like a professional one with the graphic printed perfectly in hi res and the back looks just like a disc made from a factory: the color is not blueish like its made from a dvd burner. Everything is like what you would get from a store bought copy. I doubt any pirate can make ones that rival legit copies in quality. Like I said its a foreign (russian) made disc. Perhaps the russian version is slightly different from the north american version?

Must have been done with a pressing plant then.

Sad thing is there's probably a couple hundred thousand or more such discs in circulation if they're serious about it. Probably pressed and made in China. :P

Hate to bring you bad news but yes, you bought pirated copy. I am Russian and know much about scam and scum around here. :P The guy who sold you this CD probably spent about 15-30 min. putting this disc together at home. My suggestion - never buy mixed language shifty-looking game "releases" from eBay. Especially when they are listed as Russian/English - it's a scam. Anyway, I'm not 100% sure about this (more like 95%) so please provide a link to eBay listing. I remember someone on this forum having same problem. He returned "game" for a refund and reported seller to eBay.

This is where you are wrong. I haven't bought physical copy of game or any other software in years. Digital distribution works well for me. Fast payment, immediate delivery and really convenient storage (if you remember to backup your stuff monthly). ;)

If you're looking for a good deal, check Steam store for discounts or even better - subscribe to Steam RSS Feed. I bought Mass Effect 1 with ~50% discount and use my Steam game key with retail disc image. No problems so far and the game is fully compatible with official DLC packs.

Fair enough, I should have said the point is to force you to get a copy of the code separately from the bundle of bytes that is the game itself. Whether it's on paper, in an e-mail, or added into your cloud account automatically, it's all good. ^_^

It takes a special kind of genius to put stolen goods up on Ebay. That being said, lots of antivirus programs will identify serial key generates themselves as viruses.
