I recently reinstalled Mass Effect 1 in order to do a full playthrough or two of it and the sequel.  However, the damned thing just won't run...

In two days, I've gotten all of fifteen minutes into it because, invariably, the game will either freeze randomly (with any music or ambient background noise still playing but the game itself frozen and not responding) or it will crash with a 'General Protection Fault' error.  Needless to say, this is EXCEEDINGLY irritating, especially because, obviously for this later date, my hardware exceeds the reccomended specs.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this before I completely lose it? :P

If you have a Geforce video card, the GPFs are very common with certain of the drivers from nVIDIA, most of which predate the 1.82 series.   Personally, I have no experience with freezing, and if I've read other folks' threads about that, any cures for the condition have totally escaped my recollection, sorry.

Ouch. GeForce 250 GTS here...

Is there any workaround for either issue?

Updating your drivers would hopefully work. If not, you may have to look at installing an old set of drivers.

As Kloreep says, you may need to do some driver experimenting, but we already know that drivers any older than the 1.82 aren't usable for ME-1.  Again, I have no idea at all that the freezing and the GPFs are inter-related, so we may cure one, and still need to think more about the other.

Update. Tried it again. New error unrelated to the above problems. The game went to a black screen while on the loading screen, then my monitor shut off...

If your monitor shut off, I'm guessing your computer shut off? It would be pretty odd for your monitor to be turned off by the comp.

You may be looking at hardware trouble. Perhaps your power supply is going, or at least no longer able to provide what your comp needs. (The northern hemisphere is heading into summer. If temperatures are rising then your power supply will not work quite as efficiently as it did during the cool.) Have you tried playing other demanding games since this trouble started with ME?

ME 2 works fine, oddly enough. As do most Source games. Company of Heroes, and STALKER have been crashing quite a bit, actually...

No biggy if it is a hardware fault though. I am fully aware that the computer I'm using is absolute dross, and will be replacing it in a few weeks.
