I have been toying with the idea of building an Engineer from Mass Effect 1 and bringing it into  Mass Effect 2 and i wanted to know if an Engineer is Insanity viable but more importantly is it any fun? i'll already beat ME2 with a Soldier & Infiltrator on Insanity. Played Sentinel and Vanguard and i'm working on taking a Vanguard Through Insanity so i would say i definitely possess the skill. Any suggestions or comments? here is my proposed builds

Heavy Overload
Heavy Incinerate
Explosive Drone
Cryo Blast (Level 1)
Demolisher
Tungsten Ammo

or

Area Overload
Incineration Blast
Explosive Drone
Cryo Blast (Level 1)
Demolisher
Tungsten Ammo

Replace Tungsten Ammo with Heavy (or Squad) Warp Ammo and go with the first one (with Heavy Incinerate).

You'll become a paper mache juggernaut of single-target obliteration.

My engi build is

Heavy Overload

Heavy Incinerate

Explosive Drone

Demolisher

Tungsten Ammo (or group armor piercing, ammo type depends almost exclusively on your 2 squadmates)

The drone will be your best friend on insanity, it will be both fun and manageable (not easy, but not grueling either)

Yes it's fun and viable. Your build is good, though I prefer the attack drone over the explosive drone usually. For ammo, I just stuck with squad incendiary from jacob and squad disruptor from zaeed. I like the panic incendiary ammo creates better than the heavier damage from AP.

You can respec your character based on the mission. Usually I prefer heavy incinerate, but on the reaper IFF mission, or missions that have a lot of loki mechs walking in groups, I like incineration blast.

I'd grab the last build you mentioned. The higher area effect on those abilities far offsets the small loss in damage, IMO. And with Demolisher and Tech damage upgrade you won't need the bit of extra damage from the heavy versions of overload/incinerate.

IMO it's an awesome class, has so much CC in form of the Drone, Incinirate and Overload that you can control the battlefield just how you want it.
