The pistol whip! It was great. Being nitpicky, however, I sometimes wish Shepard's face would...emote...a little when performing such emotion-driven actions. She bi*** slaps someone and her facial expression remains pretty blank. *Shrug*
In any case, having already played through it three times thus far, I loved this DLC. Simply put.
Pros:
- Music. My God, this was one of the first things that I noticed. The combat music, the cinematic music . . . mind-blowing compositions perfect for each scenario. If iTunes ever offered them, I would buy them.
- Cut scenes. One could argue that Mass Effect is basically one big cut scene due to its cinematic nature, even in info-acquiring dialogue, but the actual cut scenes are simply wonderful. Whether it's watching Shepard dive off an enormous collapsing platform (combined with great sound and visual effects), seeing her being hacked by a rogue VI, or being treated to a visually stunning and colorful 'tech' explosion, this DLC delivers in terms of cinematic quality.
- Plot/characters/voice acting. Great writing; no surprise there considering this is Bioware. The characters (even those deceased (guy complaining about a co-worker via logs) are interesting, and what's more, voice acted wonderfully. The Paragon dialogue of femShep combined with the ending scene makes the situation that much more emotional and heart-breaking. I love seeing (or hearing, rather) Shepard showing this side of her; despite being the savior of the galaxy (again), she is still a human being. All-in-all, the top quality writing, characters, and voice acting make for a very compelling story, despite being the same Ethically-Questionable-Cerberus-Experiment-Gone-Wrong plot device that we all know and...love?
- Scenery. The one redeeming factor in the Jellyfish-Armored-Vehicle sections.
Cons:
- Hammerhead. I dislike that I cannot save. I dislike that its armor capability (or lack thereof) causes this thing to beep at me and fly to cover. I dislike the two aforementioned combinations which may cause me to restart an entire mission. I am also not fond of the arcade-like tactic of the Hammerhead. Button mashing does get boring after awhile. That said, I have never had problems with maneuvering (it can be fun for the first five minutes). Unfortunately, the maneuvering only adds to its reminiscence of old arcade flight games. Perhaps this is what Bioware had in mind, however.
Hm. This is mostly my dislike of the Hammerhead in general, so I suppose my con is simply that this DLC included it.
- Difficulty. Perhaps it was just me, but this DLC seemed easy on Insanity. At least easier than the vast majority of the game. I was hoping Overlord would provide at least the same difficulty as the Kasumi loyalty mission. A minor thing, but I enjoy having challenging ground combat.
- Lack of companion dialogue/comments. I don't really consider this a con, however. Why? Because I did not expect it, considering the time, effort and money Bioware would have to expend in order to bring back the VAs. I was quite content with the simple reference to Legion. Sure, it would be fantastic for Jack to comment on another Cerberus torture/experiment considering her own troubled past with them. Or perhaps hear Legion's, Tali's, or EDI's opinion on not only a rogue VI, but an 'interfaced' organic, i.e., David. But unless this particular DLC/plotline will be signficant to ME3, I will not lose too much sleep over it.
Easily worth the $7.

Anyway, Overlord wasn't bad, it was just really easy, and I felt that it was overall very much lacking. This felt like a ME1 random planet mission as opposed to a real sidequest. Maybe it's just me though.

Also, more Simon Templeman doing voices in games is always a good thing.

Man, I was almost crying at that point.
I started playing yesterday afternoon and decided this game needed to played later at night for the true 'horror movie feel'. So later I finished the game.
No need to repeat everything that's already said, but this entire DLC was awesome. The music was probably the biggest surprise, but everything else met my expectations.
Oh, and my renegade femShep made the paragon choice. Apparently, she has a limit...

I have to disagree... the music that it plays in that sequence is the elevator music from the first Mass Effect game. I recognized it immediately.
Here is the music from the DLC.

Ah, you're right! Off the bat I thought it was Portal. Statement withdrawn.

Sorry to drag this up so many days later. But the EDI thing was (albeit briefly) referenced. If you ... well not die, but if you ignore the overlord attempting to breach communications during the boss battle, and he succeeds, you get a short little clip of Joker and EDI (voiceless but whatever) sitting on the Normandy and EDI getting infected just before the critical mission failure screen. I thought that was pretty awesomeJamieCOTC wrote...
(a few spoilers and a bit of a rant ahead).
Hands down the best dlc so far. Anyway, my first impression is that the scenery was beautiful. There was grass, water, cow-like things, birds and butterflies. Loved the elevator music in that one room. Nice touch. Liked the atmosphere, especially since I have been playing Fallout 3 lately. The story was good and had a wonderfully touching ending. No dialogue from the squad was a bit of a letdown, but the absence of EDI is my biggest gripe in that area. I liked the Hammerhead VI, but EDI should have been there. I suppose one could assume that it would not be a good idea to have her inner act w/ a hostile VI, but I don’t think it was addressed and the Hammerhead VI seemed to fair fine. The combat was tight and well leveled, but could have been a bit longer. I would have gladly traded more time w/ Shep for the Hammerhead. Dear god, I hate that thing. Then again, I’m not a fan of arcade games and that’s what the Hammerhead reminds me of. (Parts of ME2 remind me of that too, but that is another thread). It’s a great idea, which for me anyway, just doesn’t click. I don’t want a Mario Brothers game w/ the hopping over rocks and the jumping to the next levels in my Mass Effect. I’m sure there are people who loved that part of it, but I’m not one of them. And the damn thing seems to be made out of tissue paper (unless falling off a cliff or hurling into a mountain at 80 miles an hour). But, I digress.
All in all it is the best of the N7 missions (or what the ME2 N7 missions should have been like to begin with). Sorry, had to get that one last ribbing in there. One good thing for sure, the quality of this dlc is the best yet and hopefully that will be a trend. I don’t expect a story based dlc next month, but perhaps by fall, we can see something even bigger and better. ‘till then, I’m up for more hairstyles for femshep or a new handgun. Either one is fine w/ me.

My favourite DLC would be Bring down the sky, because of the heavy choices that was made at the end of the mission regarding the hostages.
But Overloard will be second best only because of the great storyline in BDTS.
Well done Bioware!!!!!!!!

The environment is very nice, i find it awkward that a couple of places have no actual geomety, just appearance (leading to the Hammerhead flying straight through rocks, etc.) ... and yes, I'm one of those people who goes flying at full boost off the side of a cliff just to test these things
Above all else is the ending of this story, even though I went the paragon route (and hit the paragon action on the last cutscene), i still expected Shepard to whip out a space knife and jab it in the guys eyeballs, kinda wanted him to as well. I go with the breather helmet at all times, it just looks better imo, so his expressions never really matter to me (though I've noticed some complaints about Shepard apparently having a blank face while he pistol whips the guy in the nose). But the very last few seconds, focusing on David while he was talking, it was a tear jerker, i won't lie. It's amazing that in so short an amount of time, just enough of a background story can be given so that you become semi-attached to the fate of the characters. All in all, this was superbly done, minus a few very forgiveable flaws. I can only hope that DLCs in the future bring this kind of quality to the world of Mass Effect.
Completely off tiopic ... I don't know if BioWare is going to read this, or if they even have much of a say so in who gets casted for the upcoming Mass Effect movie (though I imagine they should), but if they are, and if they do, this is a suggestion ... please be VERY careful with who you cast into this movie. I've seen soo many video-games gone movie that just utterly FAIL, I would really like for Mass Effect to not be one of them ... and for the love of god do not pick Vin Diesel. That is all . . .
