At first I was pretty upset that Kaidan turned his back on Shepard. But, then I kind of understood why. The writers really dropped the ball with this one. I know they did it to create conflict but, it totally sucked. I wish we could have at least gotten a kiss and a hug. Well here is to hoping that in ME3 you will get the chance to make up for lost time. If you didn't cheat :)

Uh, you do hug.  Well at least if you romanced them.

Well the lines Shepard had for this situation didn't help either...i mean really..who would say that in this situation...Shepard acts like nothing happened..most of the time

Notice I said writing, not any character's in particular. It was all poorly done. Though at least Ash's/Kaidan's position is tenable.

Yeah... the whole situation was poorly handled by the writers.

No "Finally! I'm so glad to see you, Ash. Nobody wanted to tell me where you were!" option, just "Hey, whats up? How are you doing?" that was just... meh, don't want to think about it.
I'll just wait for ME3 and hope that we will have a chance to sort things out with Ash. At least we got a hugImage IPB

I'm guessing that's what bioware was going for. So that anyone who had a relationship in ME 1 would have an excuse to try out the shiny new LI's.

Sure, that's what they were going for. However, excuse? You only need excuse if you've done anything wrong, and there is completely nothing, zero wrong in choosing a different LI after what was said. So, the devs provided a reason, not an excuse.

What if the ME1 LIs had a really good excuse to not join Shepard?  Like, they were kidnapped by the Collectors, or they were incapacitated in some other way.  Would moving on be cool then?

I personally think it would still depend on the way one plays their Shepard, because some people want to think of the ME1 romance as a fling, while others took it seriously, but if they had handled the reunion in ME2 differently, and didn't make it a conscious choice on the part of the ME1 LI not to join Shepard, more people would have wanted to stick with their original LI.  Although I am a ME1 LI apologist in many ways, I can't help but think that if the writers were really confident about the new LIs, they wouldn't have had to make us angry at the old ones.

Of course it would be different. It would be circumstances keeping them apart, not their own words and choices. A huge difference in my book.

That is very true. Though I guess I'd still pick Garrus over Kaidan, but I'd make a different ME1 playthrough for that=). The intent of writers is very transparent. And disappointing. However, I can't understand how is it possible to blame a writer, not a character. After all, is an author writes that a character does something, then that is what character does. Sorry, have some difficulty expressing this thought clearly (English is not my first language), but, imho, an original writer techically cannot write a character "out of character".

I would agree, if we were talking about a series of books by a single author, that if a character suddenly changes or does something surprising or previously uncharacteristic, that's just development, and we shouldn't blame the writer for "ruining" the character.  However, when you're dealing with television, or in this case, a series of video games, where you have many different writers and producers influencing the final product, I think it is possible to lay blame when characters are suddenly acting in a way that doesn't make sense to the viewer/player.  If a single episode of a television show has a character suddenly acting in a way that is weird or different than usual, you blame the writers of that particular episode, and try to look past it.

In the case of ME2, I would say the character who has been most changed is Shepard.  We are no longer allowed to work for the Alliance, and no reason is given other than it being a plot device.  Shepard *could* have convinced the Virmire Survivor to come along, if the writers had allowed it.  And the Virmire Survivor and Liara could have had a better, more convincing reason to stay away, if they had wanted to write it that way.

Right now I'm chalking ME2 up as a "bad episode" of the trilogy, at least when it comes to character development of the ME1 characters...including Shepard.  We learned more about what makes characters like Miranda and Jack tick than we did about the character we are supposedly role playing.  Why wouldn't a Sole Survivor confront TIM about Akuze?  Why wouldn't a Spacer try to contact his/her mother?  Why wouldn't someone who is staying faithful to Liara beg her to let them help her in her quest to take down the Shadow Broker, and not take no for an answer?

I'm just hoping we get more character development in the last game for Shepard, and if *any* former party members get cameos, I hope they're better written than the ones in ME2.  I would be very disappointed if Miranda, for instance, gave some vague excuse as to why she couldn't join my party, and my character couldn't respond or ask for more information from her.
