Being an archer is simply pointless in current game

I have no complaints, although I haven't played the PC as an archer yet.

An archer is not a machine gunner, the archer is designed to be more of a debuff/CC type of class. The damage it deals out is good and being ranged damage is very useful for mobs that have AOE melee attacks (like the first ogre).

just try to FIND normal arrows in this game there are NONE.The fire and ice arrows costs more a king's ransom. 40 fire or ice arrows will cost the party more than half the accumulated gold coming out out of the broken circle after completeting Lothering. Archery in this game is a totaly design flaw that is only to be used by the enemy. Bio Ware has made archery for players or the support NPC's so unbelievably expensive and rare no arrow drops from archers that shoot you, to be insanely bad.
Epic fail !!

you'd be suprised how much damage it can deal before the mobs get to you.....and then get caught in the traps you laid...and then the acid flask after that.....
but wait....you just charge into melee dont you ?

Gotta call this out. I find that this is not true. My main PC I have been playing is lvl 14 now, and the profile upload still shows me as lvl 6, and none of the Stats have uploaded.
Don't even try and lecture on this subject. Some people also don't have solid internet at home. (I have cable so, I am good) but some people might just be playing on their PC or console and posting on the forums when say they are at work or something.

My arrow of slaying at level 14 puts out on average 200 damage (the highest I've hit is 260 thus far).

Either you are a troll who doesn't own the game yet or you pirated it most likely. Either way I think your thread is fail because of it.
This is out of line. The game and the BioWare servers are having all sorts of issues uploading people's characters. This has been posted on the BioWare support forums.
Keep it cool. You were winning the argument in my eyes until you started the accusations. You almost had me convinced to go back to my archer.
Back on topic - I tried a Dalish Archer rogue. He's currently parked, lost in the Fade, since archery just didn't seem to be cutting it. He's a little less than 10th level if I recall rightly. Alistair and the dog were just doing so much damage I was having a hard time getting aimed shots in.
I rerolled a Human Noble Warrior, and by god is he wreaking havoc on the battlefield in comparison.
Oh, and he has yet to show on the servers. I've been playing him since Saturday night. Also, all the other characters I started just to see the Origin stories...

I do! I charge like a crazy barbarian swooping down out of the hills.
Swooping is bad, you say? Well yes, I've been slaughtered a few times for it. But then I'm playing a warrior, and love just getting in the fight and bashing away.
But I have yet to figure out how to throw grenades, and those trap thingies are so complicated...

The real problem as far as I can tell is when your an Archery Warrior. The specilizations are not ranged weapon friendly.
As for the CC vs DPS debate. In CC archers fail compared mages for groups and rogues for single targets. In DPS they fail compared to... everyone? My tanks out DPS my main (Tier 7 bow), mages out DPS everyone and my rogue (Zev assassin/duelist) out DPS's my PC as well.
Now, one thing is that archery comes with like 4 different stances, that are mutually exclusive (except suppressing fire), where other talent specs can stack stances (2h warrior) or only have 1-2.
The other main problem is the cast time. My bow debuffs are probably the longest casting spells in my parties arsenal (I don't have the tier 4 primal spells). As such they're pretty useless on normal/lieutenant mobs. On bosses I'm unsure how effective they are (considering they miss 30-40% of the time [I have 102 attack at level 14]).
Pros of Archery Warrior
-Arrow of Slaying (insane damage, great for getting that enemy mage)
-Scattershot, one of the better AoE CCs in the game, huge AoE (cone I believe).
-Suppressive fire can be pretty decent on a boss (I *believe*)
Cons
-Too many stances that are mutually exclusive
-Too long cast time on all our spells (most mage spells are insta-cast or faster at least)
-Low damage per hit (I do ~33ish damage) for the gear I have (Sten doing 50+ at level 9-10 with a crap weapon). The longbow seems to do about half the damage of a two-handed weapon, or a bit less.

Also, can you backstab with a bow? `cause that would make Assassin a good sepc for archers.

Archers have been high-damage in MMOs going back much further than WoW...FFXI Rangers had the best damage in the game, and the same was true for other MMOs like Ragnarok Online. I think in general the expectation of action RPGs is what's causing so many problems for people. I hated Dragon Age combat my first day or so.Suspage wrote...
It's clear that WoW ruined the mind of RP gamers.
I think everyone should play through as a warrior first; with sword/shield, combat is much more forgiving and you'll die less. This will cause less frustration, and you'll learn the combat system as you go. Mages and archers are more advanced combat classes, IMO.

However, I do propose that a build that doesn't become effective until late into the game (lvl 16 say) does require tweaking. Perhaps they should change the low lvl talents. Make them more useful like many of the mages low lvl spells.

Apparently not a creative sort. All you can come up with is DPS or Tank?
I think WoW still works.

It's hard enough to balance classes - balancing them at every stage of the game is even worse. It's fairly traditional in D&D for classes that are more powerful in the endgame (wizards, for example) to be weaker at early levels. I find Dragon Age to be similar. My first play was as a rogue, and it was awful, because I was choosing rogue stuff at the start. I find the game goes easier if you frontload for combat, then pick up the crafting and other stuff later.NetBeansAndJava wrote...
After reading the posts, I must agree that I may have judged archery too soon. I too thought it was worthless, but that may be because I haven't yet reached a significant level to make it effective.
