I've only recently got Leliana and I'm planning to keep her in my team for the rest of the game. For those in the know, what build would you recommend for her? Keep her an archer? Go for dual wielding? What kind of second specialisation makes most sense for her?

Other than that, my strike team consists/will consist of mage, Morrigan and Dog/Sten/[spoiler].

I kept her as an archer and was disappointed in her general fragility and lack of damage output. I'd consider switching her to dual wield, even though she's sunk some talent points into archery already. I recently started a new game with a dual wield rogue and she's much more effective than Leliana ever was.

You don't need her to do damage with two mages. Max out her trap/lockpicking stuff first, then go for archery talents. By the end of the game she will dish out 50~ damage arrows which is quite enough, and she will be able to open like everything in the game which is the main reason to bring her tbh. If you want/need damage for harder difficulties get the dualwield rogue instead.

Except the dual wield rogue comes with no points in lockpicking. Very annoying.

its kinda annoying that lockpicking.. takes talents which hurt her/your combat progression as a rogue. She died alot with me if she tried to melee, but i need her for treasure :S.. So for me the solution was to make her a skilled archer who picks targets who try to hurt my mage, and if they come close use dirty fighting relocate mage and archer and start blasting again.

My mage does alot of cc while my 2 warriors do the dps, and leliana is pure protective of the mage.

works quite well :)

(btw main is a dwarf 2hander with sweep and ciritcal strike maxed for group/boss fights and allistair doing massive stuns and quite some dps with his 2x enchanted 1hnd axe)

I'm using her as utility. I've had her pick up combat movement, and coup de grace as well as full lock picking in the Rogue trees. Grabbed the archery talents with status effects, just melee archer on first, to crippling shot, and full third row. Other than that fleshing out Bard and Ranger.

She probably spends 70/30 ranged/melee. But mostly she keeps my bedroll warm.

I like that, seeing as my mage has a tendency to attract attention. Was she effective at protecting yours?

Yeah, it really depends on your party. If you are filled with tanks keep her as an archer. She can do some good damage with the bow though so even if you have a mage or two, still keep her as an archer. the only time I would not recomend keeping her at all is if you have another rogue in your party.

You can apply Georg's hotfix if you want more bow damage, but then she should use a shortbow. Also, enemy archers will be tougher. ;)

put some points into her strength early on so she can use to better crossbows & fill out her archery skills to pull out assists/stat afflictions for when you get better weapons on your other characters. I played as a rogue, so i kept the lockpicks, set up her tactics slot so she goes stealth for at least a good opening crit... probly figured this out already. Same thing for Zevran. Who you take then much depends whether your good/bad...

Leiliana has five purposes:

1. Sex
2. Stories
3. Lockpicking
4. Stealing
5. Supressing Fire

Self Any: Activate Supressing Fire
Self Any: Activete Rapid Shot
Self Any: Activate Bard song Valor
Enemy: Highest Health    Action: Attack

Let her go around debuffing everyones attack rating. That is what she is good for.

All the mobs will have a tough time hitting anyone with supressing fires debuff.

It looks like you don't have a tank in your party. You should amend that. Sten is a poor tank, and Dog can't tank at all (he's pretty fragile, but most importantly he doesn't generate enough aggro).

I guess with your current party Leliana would do more good as a DW rogue, because without a tank you need all the DPS you can get.

I always say

(Insert Rocky style training video featuring Zevran in the party camp here)

Yeah.... once Zevran has learned to pick most/all locks by his secret intense training regiment in camp , its all over for Lelianna

She was aweseome in my non-mage party with my 2Handed, Alistair and Sten. Lots of movies to show it so don't just take my word for it!

She's a Master Archer with a one hit kill talent (and highest Hit dmg dealer of the party) and I added just one Assassin skill to make her more like the Orlesian Bard Assassin that she is. Mark of Death only. And while she had no points into any melee talents, she still could do an entrance with her dual daggers... specially in one particular legendary duet with my char.

Not true. I try to get away from the Ez-Mode with Alister as tank + aggro drawing abilities and use my War dog instead and it turn out to be quite challenging for me for every boss battle and I like it so far and no Morrigan in party as well make it a bit more difficult on tougher boss. Running on Normal atm. I might try Hard and see how it goes hehe

3 vs  5 boss fight

**Spoiler.**

Don't click on the below link if you haven't beat the Werewolf final encounter yet

imo the war dog as tank require lots of player skill to control the battle without using Aoe taunting like Alister and with the long cool down, it take timing to use it right to save your fragile healer on your dog and it self from getting overwhelm.

I also have Leliana equip with dagger and bow, shes the perfect combo for any encounter without Morrigan in my party.

I can't take you seriously when you don't have Arrow of Slaying in that list. Leliana earns her pay in every fight for me with Arrow of Slaying and a tactic to use it on mages at the start of each fight. It's quite nice to see a mage start throwing spells and right as my fighter starts closing on them, they drop dead to one arrow. Or at least drop in health enough that it only takes one smack from the ol' Chasind Great Maul to finish them.

I totally ignored Leliana's archery talents in my 2nd playthrough and basically shaped her to be a DW rogue because a) I wanted to see if it was possible/viable B) I wasn't playing a rogue and you get Leliana pretty early on. It turned out all right eventually (she would dish out decent damage in the end) but the main problem is, since Leliana comes with 3-4 archery talents right off the bat, it's basically "dead weight" in the first 6 levels, AFTER you acquire her. There are other problems with "respeccing" her (with no mods that is), she already has a specialization so it isn't possible to make her a duelist/assasin, her Str is quite low, so if you want her to wield one of the better longswords, again you need to spent a lot of time (and tomes and gear) on her (since she isn't the main, she lacks certain bonuses that only the main character can get) to make her a viable damage dealer.

In my humble opinion, it's not worth the effort. Keep her as an archer and (ab)use arrow of slaying/critical shot/scatter shot when they aren't on cooldown. The sustained modes are all underwhelming anyway (in comparison to melee skills) so up to you really.
