Why are some locations on the world map colored yellow occasionaly? I have re-visited them to see if I missed something, to no avail.

I think those are the locations for DLC stuff.

As Der Kirk said, they are generally the areas that initiate the various DLC quests. Once you go there, you'll have some fight or conversation or whatever and then the real area will open up on your map. From my experience you only have to visit each one once and then they go away.

Mine have stayed yellow...even after the quests are completed.

After the archdemon fight, those are the only locations you can go to except for the party camp. Not that there's anything to do in most of them, except for Soldier's Peak!
Still, it's good to be able to go to Soldier's Peak, get the stuff I intend to carry into Awakening from the party chest, sell other stuff off, and otherwise kit myself out.
