Don't be ridiculous. Miranda would've fixed something like that as soon as she rebuilt him, ingenious woman that she is.

First thing she'd have changed. Few tweaks, it's done - unlimited performance satisfaction for life. 2 out of 4 billion credits well spent. The Illusive Man never has to know.

As the town drunk said to the Old Biddy after she objected to him bathing in a horse trough, "If you don't like what you see, don't look."

This got me wondering as well. I asked a friend of mine (who's played through the game at least three times) about that and he said one word: "vibrations".

I asked if I was supposed to know what that meant, but he didn't really care to tell me because he thought I wasn't mature enough or something (I'm 20). lol

Its like being on an oversized washing machine on spin cycle.
Miranda has the right idea.

My main concern is in the "perving squadmates" pic, why does it look like Shep's head and chest have melted?
I figure Miranda is good, but not -that- good. Even Morinth can only manage to give you an embolism.

She's cleary bored to tears with beds since she seems to spend 99.9% of her time in a room with one....

We all spend a large portion of our lives in places with beds and couches, yet I have no desire to go hump someone on my front porch. :P

Plus Shepherd can always purchase 'upgrades'. Hah, and people think the heavy bone weave is for combat.

As previously mentioned it is all to do with the core.

Clearly Miranda is just the type of girl who likes a quick shag in the engine room.

Jacob has a perfect view over the engine room (and the catwalk!). Miranda takes a heavy risk to make him jealous....but the priiiiize.

I swear to God, this is the zombie topic from hell. It won't go away. I want to stab it with a sharp object until it dies. I'm going mad. I'm starting to see things. What was that? A shadow just moved. There's cottage cheese everywhere. I hear "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" on an old record player, where's it playing, where's it coming from?!

Yes, Miranda shagged you in the freaking engine room!!! You know you liked it!!! Get over it!!!!!!!

And of course, it must be because she's petty and vindictive! Yes, I'll bet she recorded the whole thing with a hidden camera just to be evil and then gave the tape to Tali, providing play-by-play narrations of each kiss and hip thrust as Tali weeped uncontrollably in a corner, while belowdecks Jack lay on her bunk dragging a knife across her arm and sobbing!

I sense much anger in you.

We Miranda fans tend to get angry at the insinuation that selecting the engine room says something bad about her. It does not. She likes sex in unusual places - so what?

In a few similarly-named topics, I have said that she selected it because it was neutral territory, so that this event cannot be interpreted as one belongig to the other. The location underlines their status as equals.

Of course, this is an after-the-fact interpretation. The real question is: why did Bioware select this location - with all the disadvantages like observable by at least one team member, a corrugated metal floor, the workplace of another team member etc.? Someone, IMO, really didn't think about this more than "Oh, wouldn't that be cool".

Personally, I would have preferred the scene to take place in Miranda's room, in front of the window looking out at space. That would have been romantic, and still very different from the other romances. But we got the engine room. It's not my favorite location, but it's OK. And it definitely says nothing bad about Miranda.

@Nightwriter:
I feel with you. But since we can't kill this zombie for good, better dismember it while it's shambling around.

@CptPatch:

Edit:
I have to retract one statement and correct one often-made mistake: The place where Miranda and Shepard meet in the engine room is not observable from anywhere! The two windows from Mordin and Jacob look out over the engine core, but Miranda and Shepard never go there. The other rooms have no windows to the engine room. Jack's place is separated by a door and/or the floor, and Tali has been moved. So much for the "rub it into my rival's faces" argument.

Seriously, I enjoyed Miri's Romance arc, I really did. However I can only see her choice of location to consumate the relationship doing about fifty different kinds of damage to Shepard's back. To put it simply: Can YOU imagine having a shag while laying on a grated walkway? Talk about ouch.

I'm sure others have considered this question before.  But I have my own theory:

When Miranda finally decides to jump Shepard's bones, she arranges to do so in the Engine Room, rather than her quarters or his.  Some have theorized that she chose that locale because it's "neutral ground".  I have a simpler theory:

Miranda is a Bee-otch, with a capital "B".

Consider what else is in the immediate vicinity:  Tali's post is just around the corner.  And there's no doors in between.  Even if Tali was told to vacate, she's bright enough to understand why she's being told to leave her post.

Jack's quarters are wide open to the open shaft under that platform where Miranda and Shepard go at it.  Undoubtedly, Jack will hear every "oomph", "ahh!" and "oh, god!" that those two let slip.

Miranda is a Bee-otch, with a capital "B".

Miranda MUST know that her two competitor's for Shepard's Romantic inclinations will be intimately aware that she, Miranda, got him and they did NOT.

Miranda is a Bee-otch, with a capital "B".

It's not enough that she win the competition.  She has to rub the losers' noses in it.

Beeeeeee-otch.

If you were a gal you'd know that vibrations....um....enhance certain things in a romantic moment like that.

"Still a (wo)man will see what she wants to see and disregard the rest."
From Tali's station to where Miri and Shep go at it is less than 10 steps away.  There's no doors.  Just round or look around  the corner and there's the whole show in progress.  So, Miri "cleared the Engine Room; so what?  "Tali, I need you out of the Engine Room for the next hour or so."  "Why is that, Miranda?"  "None of your business!  Just obey my order!"  There is NO line of conversation that doesn't let Tali know something is up -- and she's bright enough to figure out what that something is.

Then look closely at the graphics for the end of the catwalk.  There is a window to the front making a barrier to the engine itself.  But to either side there is open shaft.  The end of catwalk is free floating _directly_ above Jack's preferred locale -- which was NOT cleared.

I grant you the attraction of washing machine-type vibrations,  but what kind of person is THAT much of an exhibitionist -- and doesn't care about the impact on her commanding officer's reputation with the people in his command?

Beeeee-otch.

OMG this thread. . . again, WTF, i dont know if you guys have the intelect to read but the reason they have there intimate scene in the engine room is to do with the core enhancing her biotics and using the biotics with shepard and there private moment, and i really dont think that she thought about the others watching through the windows or the fact jacks room is underneath, i mean come on if she wanted shep that bad then shes not gonna figure out this elaborate plan to make sure no one knows she probbly just thought of the imidate vicinity -tali- and thats all, I or one highly doubt Miranda would want anyone to watch her and shepard having an intimate moment, shes just not that type of girl. Now for the love of god let this topic die.

What is it with you "End this thread NOW!" people?  Are you the Thread Police?  Have you been empowered to to enforce some unwritten code about what is or isn't appropriate discussion material?  If the subject matter bothers you sooooooo much, simply don't open the thread.  If the subject really is "dead", having been brought up ad nauseum, the situation is self-correcting: people won't bother to post any comments and the thread drops from sight on its own.

I can well understand that _some_ people think Miranda is an admirable character, and they may not like having a character they admire being dissed by others.  Fine; everyone is entitled to their opinion, and in a public forum they can even go so far as to create umpteen threads singing her praises.  But I -- and everyone else here -- have NO right to tell them to essentially "Shut up!" just because I disagree with what is being said.  Or even just because I feel "It's all already been said before."  If people want to make a comment on any subject on their mind, that's their perogative.

Besides the core being used as an enhancer of Miranda's biotic ability, which I think a probable actual answer, Timmibal's answer is my favourite:

Notice how 'busy' Miranda is throughout the whole game?

They do it in the engine room because she's supposed to be working, they're playing hookey. In terms of timeframe, the remainder of the LI scenes occur 'after hours'.

A bit like an office romance sneaking off to the boardroom for a quickie.
