Just wanted to let people know that I finally (I think) found what was causing problems with my textures disappearing. After setting Windows to a 'clean boot' state (and noticing that Avast wouldn't let you turn it off) I figured it was worth a go uninstalling the software to see if that made a difference.
I played for 10 minutes or so late last night to test and all textures appeared to be working fine! Thanks to Levi for all the help!
I just wanted to let people know in case they end up with similar problems
Cheers!

Does AVAST keep logs of stuff like blocked file/hardware access attempts? If so, I'll bet you can find out what exactly was triggering it. Also, most AV suites have a way to tell them to leave a program alone.

I'm sure they do, I'm showing how un-geeky I am
Anyway, turns out I spoke too soon... textures are still disappearing as usual... *sigh*
When might I be able to play the game...

Another trouble with Avast (ver 6.0.1367):
DAO (Dragon Age: Origins) don't start (only black screen appears) when I run it through Origin.
If I run DAO through desktop shortcut - all is well.
My research has shown that DAO can be started through Origin when:
Behavior Shield switched off.
Or "Monitor the system for unauthorized modifications" in expert settings of Behavior Shield switched off.
Or following items added in trusted processes in expert settings of Behavior Shield:
C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Origin\\Origin Games\\Dragon Age Origins RU\\DAOriginsLauncher.exe
C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Origin\\OriginClientService.exe
C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Origin\\OriginLegacyCLI.exe
