 *Sigh*

I started playing Dragon Age awakening the other day and though I'm not completely finished yet, I must admit that I found quite a fancy to Varel.... do not ask!

He's sweet, all buisness like,  very easy on the eyes *rrrrrrrowrrrrr* and quite frankly I just like everything about the guy! The only thing I'm rather peeved about is that no one else seems to share my fascination with the man! What's not too like people?

I always end up liking the character that no GOOD fanfiction is ever written about!

Just look at Sten... would it kill you to write a good 'I-am-suffering-and-dearly-need-the-help-of-my-companions-even-though-I-would-never-admit-it-five-to-four-chapter-story?'

....

okay maybe not then. -_-

*Sigh*

Varel would be much better exactly the other way around :P

You're not alone at all. Varel is noble, handsome, and has so much about him which I find generally just likable.  That gent could've warmed my Warden's tent any night. ;) Varel also has a lovely deep, steady, smooth voice. His personality is easy going, but at the same time it's strong.

Unfortunately, I don't really write fan fiction for the public, but had to say you're not alone. Varel is an awesome character!

Varel is awesome, though as a heterosexual man I don't have quite the same fascination for him ;). He was, however, a really awesome character.

Yay!

Messa not alone in my fascination of sexy old man!

And great to know Eudaemonium! I'm just really glad there are a few other who like him a little bit at least :)

Granted, I haven't beaten Awk (only a couple of partial runs), but I don't think anything was setting him up for that.

I'd point out that there's no spoilers here but I have no idea what you mean, either I missed something quite important or there is some way to save him... Who would've thought he'd turn out to be a darkspawn though, that's probably the biggest spoiler.

Anyway, my only objection to the man is the way he steals dialogue from you when you first meet him. After you save him he basically just says "thanks" and wanders off, then he keeps interrupting when the king / queen is talking to you. Damn him...

The voice actor did a great job. I was really happy when I first heard him. :)

The voice actor is good, no doubt, however since he also voiced Zaeed Masani for ME2, it took me a while to get the "mercenary" picture out of my head when talking to Varel.

The only thing that stunk was that if you don't go to Vigil's Keep at the end, you never really figure out what happens with him. I wish they made him a Warden too, because having a non-Warden do the Joining ritual just seems wrong, especially when the PC is standing right there.

Didn't the same guy do the voice for the guy in Redcliffe? Can't remeber the name but he had a moustache and was in charge of the defences. I think it was the same actor...

But yeah Varel was a cool character - i actually wish that he could have been recruitable.

That's because the PC has no voice.

He meant Murdock, the major. Not sure about it, but yes, Murdocks voice is similar to Varel.

Why doesn't the epilogue mention him?

ah, thinks for the update -- speaking of Murdock: Does any one else every notices that he has two voices? A very deep raspy one and one sounds more normal? Depends what lines, he is saying?

But Murdoch had a voice change during the dialogue...first it was raspy then it was clear then it went back to raspy. How odd i thought.

I'm pretty sure he also voiced Harrowmont.

My impression of Murdock was that he was a tough, gravely, no-nonsense plain spoken guy who was a little uneasy on social graces. His reactions to the Warden vary if its a man or a woman, elf, human, etc. and some of them were pretty blunt. When his voice changes, I think it was after you do something like Persuasion and he seemed to soften up for a fraction of a second to reply, then went back to being crusty again.

... Or maybe MistySun's got it and Murdock was nipping too much of ole' Lloyd's liquor. ;)

Thats not much of an excuse though- you have dialogue with characters and you never hear the PC's voice. I'd rather they have an unvoiced PC just click the text for the Joining  than really messing with the lore by having some non Grey Warden do the Joining under the excuse that "Oh he's BFF's with the Wardens, so we'll let him in on our deepest, darkest secrets."

Sure it might not be as cinematic with the PC doing it, but there wasn't much gravitas in the Awakening Joining scenes anyway, but thats a topic for another thread I suppose...

I thought it was kinda odd that Zaeed was performing the joining ritual.

But yes, Robin Sachs has a distinctive voice.

And the only reason I want a voice protagonist for DA2 is just because I was VERY upset by the fact that I couldn't even perform the joining ritual... because I had no voice. And I couldn't do the pre-battle in Denerim speech despite me being 'leader of the armies' because once again, I had no voice. Pisses me off to no end.

I concur on the Joining bit. It struck me as really odd. Although Alistair was a Junior member at the PC's initiation, he was at least a Warden and Duncan ran it. If nothing else, I would have liked to have had a few lines similar to Duncan's part so I was part of it rather than being told: "Congrats, they lived. It's a Warden."

I also wondered why it was so easy in Awakenings? I haven't read any of the novels, comics, RPG or any of the other stuff that's "canon" for the world. In the game, however, Alistair tells you he doesn't know how the Joining is done, exactly, just that it takes lyrium. Duncan tells you he had mages preparing for yours. It sounded more involved than it was in Awakenings, unless they have whatever is in the cup premade and on hand? Anyone know?
