Re: prepping the Joining: one of Awakening's many, many discrepancies. I eventually assumed that my mage Warden had figured it out from Riordan's papers and was the one doing all the real work off camera. I don't know how other people justify it, but the game offers nothing.

Okay, it wasn't the guide, it was the wiki.
"Varel, like most Awakening characters, has several endings. He ------- defending Vigil's Keep against --------- or will lead the Silver Order for many years. He is not mentioned in the epilogue screens."
Edited out the major spoilers. I personally have only played through once, so I've never gotten the 2nd ending, nor do I know how to get it.
Anyway, yes, I do enjoy Varel. The va did a great job. But yes, he has done quite a few characters in DA - Harrowmont, Murdock, Zaeed from ME2. I think he's one of the male preset voices as well.
As for the 'softening' of his voice when talking to Murdock, I always just thought they were using lines ment for another character or something. Like it was mixed up since he did several and they didn't pay attention to make sure the roughness stayed true to the character when tieing the vo into the game.

I liked Varel a lot too. I started Awakenings with my Origins HN warden wearing the Armor of Diligence so Varel and I were matchies too!
lol! I did that on my second play!
But it would be interesting if there was a different ending for him.
But that aside I still wish they featured him a little more.... okay he feautred a lot, but it would have been nice to include him into your party perhaps or something like that.
They usually make such great character growth in the game.
With Seneschal I found myself begging for more!

Golumfryingeggs that would probably be the most boring fan fiction ever read, but if I ever write down those imaginary conversations I'd LIKE to have had with Varel, I'll send you a link. LOL

Good work, Ferret! That's two games I've really enjoyed.

Since Varel is a pretty unavoidable character, I really strove to make him appealing to as many people as possible. Otherwise some folks would be stuck with a senschal they wanted to strangle. Same rationale I had for Kana in Crossroad Keep in NWN2. The more quirky characters got to be outside the keep - Wade, Herren, and Dworkin.
Awww, I liked Wade, Herren, and Dworkin. I was delighted to see Wade and Herron back for background flavor. They never fail to make me laugh. Definitely quirky, but a great job on all of them!

There are spoilers in it for the original storyline in Origins since it takes place in Awakenings, but as long as you've played a very short way into Awakenings it shouldn't give anything major away.
There's also some tutorials, a couple of music videos, and all sorts of general DA stuff mixed in there.

The voice actor did a great job. I was really happy when I first heard him.
The voice actor is good, no doubt, however since he also voiced Zaeed Masani for ME2, it took me a while to get the "mercenary" picture out of my head when talking to Varel.
I knew Bioware liked to recycle thier voice actors and i knew i have heard him someplace before. Thanks for clearing up this for me.

Doesn't the codex mention that Varel is especially trusted by the wardens. The fact that Varel knew the secrets made perfect sense to me given that there are so few wardens in Ferelden they wanted to make sure someone trusted knew the Joining in case something happened to them.
What I find strange is the fact that mages aren't needed for the ritual later in the game and in DA:A but in Ostagar Duncan needed their help

I agree that Varel is awesome, and HOT! I love Robin Sach's voice and hope he will be working with Bioware on future projects.

Come to think of it, will the next game be a continuation of Origins? Or will it be a brand new story entirely? If it's the former I'd love to see all the old companions again!
And of course Varel!

*Sigh*
I started playing Dragon Age awakening the other day and though I'm not completely finished yet, I must admit that I found quite a fancy to Varel.... do not ask!
He's sweet, all buisness like, very easy on the eyes *rrrrrrrowrrrrr* and quite frankly I just like everything about the guy! The only thing I'm rather peeved about is that no one else seems to share my fascination with the man! What's not too like people?
I always end up liking the character that no GOOD fanfiction is ever written about!
Just look at Sten... would it kill you to write a good 'I-am-suffering-and-dearly-need-the-help-of-my-companions-even-though-I-would-never-admit-it-five-to-four-chapter-story?'
....
okay maybe not then.
*Sigh*
Varel would be much better exactly the other way around
Actually I do like Varel, but not as much as I like Sten, I would love to follow him to Par Vollen or Seheron..hang out with him awhile.

ah, thinks for the update -- speaking of Murdock: Does any one else every notices that he has two voices? A very deep raspy one and one sounds more normal? Depends what lines, he is saying?
I suspect...that the voice actor that does Murdock also does the stone warrior..in Wending. Just with an accent.
I think there's some resemblance in voice patterns there, but of course I could be wrong.
