The problem appeared after I installed the game for the 2nd time, after Windows re-installation. Repro steps are as follows:
- After I click the ME2 icon to launch the game, the EA activation snippet opens asking me to log in.
- I log in providing the e-mail address and password I had previously used to activate the game.
- The activation utility says that "We could not activate Mass Effect 2 on this computer using the EA account you provided. Please take a moment to locate your game key and activate your game on this computer using your EA account."
- I click "Enter Product Key".
- I paste my key into the box and click "Submit".
- The activation tool displays a big green "play" icon (green circle with a triangle inside) saying that "Activation Completed. You have successfully activated Mass Effect 2 on this computer using your EA Account."
- I click the "play" icon.
- The following error is displayed: "We're sorry, an error has occurred. Error: We are unable to connect to EA to activate Mass Effect 2 on this computer using your account. Please try again later."
- Log in using my EADM account and re-download the game.
- Check my computer for adware/spyware/viruses/trojans, check the firewall settings.
- Start Windows in a "safety" mode with all non-essential services disabled (which means I would have to disable the Nvidia drivers service).
- Open a list of ports on my router (TCP: 42000, 15200-15300, 9945-9994, 80).
- Format my entire hard drive and reinstall Windows.
I've read a number of posts describing a similar problem but I've not found a single solution. I'll be grateful for any tips.
