Hello,

I have the following problem with my Mass Effect 2 - after re-installation of Windows 7 the game does
not want to activate.

First things first, specs and details

1.      Which Game Are You Playing - attempting to play Mass Effect 2

b.     Media: Digital Download (EA)

c.      Configuration Utility
| Game Tab
Version
Information: MassEffect2.EXE - v 1.01
2.      System Details

a.
Configuration Utility | Summary

Speed / RAM
AMD Phenom II X4 965 / 3811 MHz / 3.99 GB RAM
Display Adapter / VRAM / Driver Version (just saying
"latest drivers" doesn't
help)
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250, 1.00 GB VRAM, driver: 197.45

Operating System (& service pack if applicable)
Windows 7

Direct X Version
DX 11
3.      Problem
Details

The problem appeared after I installed the game for the 2nd time, after Windows re-installation. Repro steps are as follows:
 • After I click the ME2 icon to launch the game, the EA activation snippet opens asking me to log in.
 • I log in providing the e-mail address and password I had previously used to activate the game.
 • The activation utility says that "We could not activate Mass Effect 2 on this computer using the EA account you provided. Please take a moment to locate your game key and activate your game on this computer using your EA account."
 • I click "Enter Product Key".
 • I paste my key into the box and click "Submit".
 • The activation tool displays a big green "play" icon (green circle with a triangle inside) saying that "Activation Completed. You have successfully activated Mass Effect 2 on this computer using your EA Account."
 • I click the "play" icon.
 • The following error is displayed: "We're sorry, an error has occurred. Error: We are unable to connect to EA to activate Mass Effect 2 on this computer using your account. Please try again later."
Now, the first thing I did was to contact EA directly using their ticketing system. Here's the exact list of solutions I was offered (in order of appearance):
 • Log in using my EADM account and re-download the game.
 • Check my computer for adware/spyware/viruses/trojans, check the firewall settings.
 • Start Windows in a "safety" mode with all non-essential services disabled (which means I would have to disable the Nvidia drivers service).
 • Open a list of ports on my router (TCP: 42000, 15200-15300, 9945-9994, 80).
 • Format my entire hard drive and reinstall Windows.
I'm aware that support representatives have a set of guidelines/procedures to follow, but these solutions are plain ridiculous. Mass Effect is the only game I have problems with. There are no security risks in my system (albeit the ports, opened as requested - now closed). I'm definitely not going to reinstall entire Windows just to activate the game.

I've read a number of posts describing a similar problem but I've not found a single solution. I'll be grateful for any tips.

If EA doesn't know, I'm doubtful anyone here will.

If you're comfortable doing so, I would recommend uninstalling, then digging around in your registry and Documents and Settings sub-folders (I know I've seen EA Activation stuff there) for anything that seems related to ME2 or EA's activation system. And delete it, of course. :) Once you think you're clean of the activation system try re-installing. (Downside: if you have any other games installed via the same activation system, you may upset them.) No idea if anything will come of this, just suggesting what I would experiment with since solutions don't seem to be at hand.

By the looks of it, your firewall is blocking the communications with the authentication server. But if you are unwilling to attempt to adjust your firewall settings to see if that fixes the problem, then there is not much Bioware support staff, or anyone else, can do for you.

ME is not the only game I have had to open up ports for.

Why do you say I'm unwilling to adjust the settings? I've done everything EA representative asked me to (well, apart from re-installing the OS). Currently there's no firewall in the system (neither the built-in MS one, nor any other third-party). If it was a communication error on my side, it might be due to the router's settings but I've even added the PC to DMZ so as to allow all connections - to no avail.

Do you know the IP of the authentication server so I could maybe ping/traceroute it?

Your comment on how ridiculous it was to follow the copy book suggestions from the support faq gave me that impression.

I'll troll through my firewall logs and try and find the IP
