Cerberus is a surprisingly inept organization

Hell, the only thing they have succeeded at in the past 2-3 years was resurrecting Shepard and even that backfired on them if you destroyed the collector base and gave the data from that Cerberus operative to the Alliance.

also, Shepard didn't cause as much damage in the first game as you think

Cerberus only has about 150 members, unless this number is really unusually small for them the amount of people you killed in ME1 were pretty significant.
Seriously, I hardly trust Cerberus to walk and chew gum at the same time. They're pretty dumb.

Back on topic, I believe Cerberus has indeed messed up a few times, albeit a LOT of times. Makes you wonder: Since Miranda said Cerberus is there for the advancement of the human race, what accomplishments have they made? I mean, besides Shepard.

They inspired the Alliance to create the SSV Normandy SR1.
Had they not done that, Sovereign would've succeeded and we'd of lost.
Of course, under someone else, the SR1 wouldn't of been used correctly, but Cerberus did help inspire the weapon that gave us the victory against Sovereign.

I mean, I still can't shake the fact that they were minor baddies in ME1.
Then in ME2, we delved deep into their makings.
But in ME3, I hope they, while still made a focus, aren't as involved as they were in ME2.
More a mix of the first two games.

-Akuze (congratulations, those worm monsters the rest of the galaxy knows about are dangerous! And injecting acid into people hurts them! Who knew?)
-Rachni (got loose at the listening posts, failed to find a way to control them)
-Thorian Spores (killing the Thorian made them go out of control)
-Super Biotics (Jack escaped, Gillian escaped)
-Reaper IFF (whole team died--you could say it's a success because you managed to get the IFF, but it was their mission to recover it)
-Kahoku (you kill all of their operatives and possibly disseminate their information to the black market)
-Lost Operative (Shepard, could you go fix our failure? Please?)
-Hammerhead Missions (Shepard, we screwed up again. Would you mind...?)
And I don't think Cerberus was responsible for Miranda's boobs, her father built her within his own dynasty. So they got nothin'.
(Huh, I thought the Husk mission was a seperate chain but nope, Chasca. Apparently Feros gave them a bunch of Dragon's Teeth and they Husked everyone on Chasca. Seriously, what possible motivation could they have for that? And--Cerberus has Husk tech?!)

Can't believe I'm defending Cerberus here, but again, they inspired the creation of the SSV Normandy SR1, and they brought Shepard back from the dead.
If they didn't do the former, Sovereign would've brought the Reapers back and everyone would be dead, dying, or fleeing only to be killed later.
If they didn't do the latter, the Collector's would succeed in creating a human reaper and would probably succeed in completing Sovereign's goal in the first game.
So Cerberus has a part in saving everyone. Indirectly. Keyword obviously being "indirectly".

You have no idea what they were after or if they even failed.

That had nothing to do with Cerberus.

Jack escaped but was still utilized as a resource later on. There mere existence of Jack and Gillian is the result of success on Cerberus' part. They created super powerful human biotics, mission accomplished.

They got what they were after so it was a success. Could anyone else have done better? We'll never know but I'm not betting on it. Even the loss of the science team provided Cerberus with new information about indoctrination and husks.

Exactly. Hell, they saved Arbok and Weezing's lives. And then they made me SUPER DUPER EPIC SADFACED when they told them to leave.
Damn you, writers of the Pokémon show.

Personally what I would like to see in ME3 would be some sort of showdown, possibly face-to-face, with the Illusive Man where he shows how Cerberus is basically the reason for humanities success on the galactic stage. making Shepard look like some moody spoilt brat and forcing some sort of bizarre moral event horizon on the player. So it turns out that Cerberus really IS humanity and Mr man completely ****s with everyones heads.
Unfortunately that's unlikely to happen because it would be too awesome.
