Hi i just started playing dragon age origins did a test run to see which spells and skills are best but i still need help cause im confused lol^^

Like i said i wanna be a solo damage mage so for skills i was gonna max up coercion, and combat training for mana regen but i dunno what others i should get or if i should even max these two out^^

For spells im really confused for primal i thought having cone of cold and stone fist would be cool for single targets but i dunno if its rly useful. I was also looking forward to a strong aoe spell but dunno if i should stick with shock or inferno

Creation
I think heal isnt necessary cause i was thinking making a 2nd mage heal like morrigan or whatever^^
Haste looks good but dunno about the rest

Spirit

Ive heard that mana clash is awesome but dunno about that in practical terms
Virulent bomb seems cool for a solo mage too
Crushing prison seems pretty good too

Entropy

I really dunno about this one but ive heard that waking nightmare is really effective.

So, thats it. If anyone could help me decide the perfect build for a solo mage plz help i really wanted my 1st playthrough to be as good as possible^^
Thx in advance guys^^

Really wouldn't recommend soloing your first playthrough. The characters that join you add a lot of enjoyment to the game. Plus, the difficulty level of this game has a lot to do with how well you understand it (e.g., my first playthrough I struggled on normal, and my most recent playthrough on nightmare didn't feel that tough), so don't make it harder on yourself by playing without a team.

My suggestion, maybe play as a rogue or warrior, and take the opportunity to learn about mages by having morrigan and/or wynne in your party, then next playthrough solo a mage.

But if you're set on doing it this way then I would say...

Fireball is brilliant for a solo mage. Damage to multiple targets from a safe distance that can also knock your enemies over? Awesome.

Do get Crushing Prison. That and Forcefield are wonderful ways to deal with two immediate threats. Cone of Cold is another definite. Freezing multiple enemies is never a bad idea, and if you use a spell like Crushing Prison or Stone fist on a frozen enemy they shatter (except for higher ranking enemies).

Ye definitely go for mage, they are awesome :D

I think u should just try adding points along the way, its a good and fun way to learn about all the spells. Just use the respecc addon in case u wanna start over.

Btw petrify + stone fist = shatter, thats a great combo on single targets even though I mostly go for aoe.

for a dps mage one of your specs should definately be bloodmage and for the other I'd take spirit healer if you wanna go pure caster.shapeshifter is useless if you don't go for a pure shapeshifter build and since this is your first playthrough arcane warrior could be a bit complicated at first

I wouldn't advise going solo yet as you would miss out on a lot of dialogue and it would be too hard for your first playthrough

now for your spells I'd choose the fire line as it does the most damage.lightning drains stamina, cold slows down and freezes enemys and nature is kinda useless decide for yourself if you wanna add a second primal line.other lines that are great for damage is the walking bomb line but only fill it up to virulent walking bomb.crushing prison is also good but I didn't use it.The hex line is also pretty good especially if you fill the entropic line up to death cloud cause you get the devastating entropic death combo.I'd also take the entire mana clash line as mana clash is basicly a one hit kill against any mage and works great against gaxkang. You also get the great substainable spell might on the way which should be active all the time.for your specs fill blood magig up to blood wound and for spirit healer it would be enough to just take group heal and revive. If you have points left you could invest in either the cold or lightning chain or take grease for grease fire

thx for the help guys. But what about skills i was considering coercion, survival cause of the nature resistance, and combat training for mana regen. All of the others dont really offer nothing to improve your stats. what do u think?

Coercion offers more dialog options, easier solutions to a couple of encounters, and in a few cases somewhat better quest rewards. One level each of Trapmaking, Poison and Stealing will open some side quests, with Stealing opening an entire questline. Poison is useful for throwing bombs if that's your thing. Herbalism can be useful for the buff potions. Survival is (imo) pretty nice, but only when you get it to level 3-4 and get used to mousing over the red dots on your area map. By the time I learned how to use it, I already knew what was behind every door anyway. With a full party, you can split all of this up a bit. In a solo playthrough, I'd pretty much focus on Coercion, add one point in Stealing to do the Denerim thief side quests, and one point in Poison for throwing bombs or poisoning weapons. Anything else could go into Combat Training or Survival. Plus maybe let my companions back at camp learn enough Poison and Herbalism to keep me stocked up on top tier potions and bombs.
