I've noticed this happen a few times when my internet connection shut down and I tried to start Mass Effect 2.
I get a message about "needing to verify the DLC content with the Cerberus network" and then the game won't load my savegames until I login to Cerberus network.
Does this mean at some point in the future, if they shut down online support for ME2, we won't be able to play the game?
I'm not entirely comfortable affording them that level of control.
I was there with Tabula Rasa and I'm be very annoyed if they did it with ME2, a soloplayer game I bought and own for my personal use.
Will Bioware have to maintain the Authentication service indefinitely?

You don't have to be online to play ME2. It works for me offline on the PC version. Then again in the options menu under the online heading I clicked no for auto feedback about my gameplaying and EA account auto log in.

Maybe they will release a patch to remove the login verification. If not you'll have to pin your hopes on the Pirates to make a workaround.

My guess is that when and if they do choose to turn of their servers for this game, they will release a patch to remove the need to online verification, I seriously doubt they would just leave tons of paying fans with a bricked game, way to much negative publicity.

I never had any issues with it, just got a message saying it couldn't connect to the Cerberus Network, but could still load my games np.

I noticed it too. Like xDarkicex said hopefully they'll release a patch if it ever comes to that point.

There's login verification for Cerberus network content?
Honestly, my internet is down half the time I play and that's never come up, or is that just for the 360 and not the PC?

This is a bug. I have encountered the bug and mine is specifically related to Steam. I have seen BW devs say this is a bug and specifically not DRM, and not intentional.

I have read this a lot and I think it's an error. Some developer (I forget which one) commented on it and said that this was not intended. You SHOULD be able to load/play any saved game, including all your Cerberus network stuff. I personally can, and I know a lot of others can as well. I hope you get your problem fixed, guys! =(

Yeah, I hope they fix this issue with Steam. Practically every time I run the game via Steam I get three notification windows that "Steam has finished downloading Mass Effect 2 Digital Deluxe Edition", which indicates to me that it is verifying the three serial numbers you get with the game (ME2, Cerberus and Digital Deluxe content). I haven't had a problem yet trying to play offline, but it's only a matter of time, I guess.
