Yeah, there is a zoom. Don't know what button it is for xbox 360, but for pc it's the e button.

I didn't know there was a zoom until I was on my fourth playthrough.

For me using the sniper rifle in Mass Effect 1 is easy. I know it goes all over the place at the early part of the game but, put extra points on it and bit of patience, I can pull off a wicked shoot where the target is 50meters away.

When playing adept I did not use the sniper rifle because I cannot zoom in and miss using it. I use the shotie for an extra.

By the way, I use the right mouse button to zoom in with the sniper rifle.

I love my HMWSR X sniper rifle. Of course I got my sniper talent maxed out before I used it. 2 scram rails plus High Explosive rounds = instant kill.

Yes, tap the right thumb pad while holding left trigger. Same with Mako.

Just recently I went through Eden Prime on my brand new infiltrator and I didn't have any trouble sniping geth's on the train from maximum range with no sniper rifle training at the time. Sure scope was moving like crazy but nothing so bad what player skill cannot compensate. After investing couple points to sniper rifle training it's gonna be great. I really like the way weapon skills and customizations are made in ME1. In ME2 you simply can or cannot use x weapon and that's it. I wish Bioware would bring back some of the depth for weapons skills, enhancements and ammo system it had in ME1 with ME3.

FIrst pay attention to the ACCURACY rating and ignore the damage (at first). I try first for accuracy, then add Armor Piercing upgrading to Tungsten 7 with a Spec 7 or X rifle. Add Combat Optic X & Frictionless when they are available. Makes short work of Rocket Turrets (14 on Luna, 20+ on X57) for LOTS of EXP, Geth Armatures & Colosussi (1,000 to 2000 EACH) helps for levels 57-60 where you need 200,000 per level.
With LOTS of talent points in Sniper Rifle (but NOT all 12! Assasinate 2 + 1),  MAX Commando and 11 in Spectre, there is NO wavering, apart from your initial sighting even when standing, the rifle will return to EXACTLY the same spot with each reloading! Then just hammer away until the target blows up!
ALWAYS shoot from behind cover (JUST over the top of the hill, just UNDER the rock out cropping or building), you only need to see a small portion of the target to kill it.
This applies to ME 1, very limited use in ME 2, I stick with the Assault Rifle when playing as Sentiel or Adept.

Decided to play through ME1 again for fun.  Did my last playthrough as a soldier so I thought I'd go Infiltrator this time and do the long range thing.  OMG I hate the sniper rifle so much!  I've not even past the Eden Prime mission and I'm SO SICK of the stupid thing.  Using the assault rifle just seems boring because that was my bread and butter on my last play through.  The uncontrolled wavering whenever you zoom in is simply too much for me.

Will lowering the game from veteran to normal help this?

I know that eventually I'll get stabilizer upgrade but I'm having a hard time finding the will to play and I'd REALLY like to try it as an Infiltrator....any advice?

It really is bad to begin with.  I dont think that the difficulty setting will make any difference, although I may be wrong?  The only way to improve it, is by levelling up your sniper rifle section and adding upgrades to the weapon.

I don't think the sniper rifle is that bad. I used it from the beginning and had no trouble with it (on insanity). You just need to aim carefully or wait a few seconds (and crouch!).

One thing I have to remember when I replay ME1 is that there's no such thing as a headshot with the sniper rifle. Just get the enemy somewhere in your crosshairs and you're good.

I had a friend who was ridiculously good at using the sniper rifle from the very start, in spite of all the shaking. Not that he could tell me how he managed it other than he was simply better than me.

It certainly helps teach patience and timing. Other than that, I'd rather use the pistol until SR is high enough.

funny thing is when i did my inflitrator play through on ME1 i forgot my speacality was range i complete the game with the pistol.:D

Sniper rifle is only good when you are at the end of the game.

Beginning + sniper rifle = don't use it, use the pistol.

I was able to use the sniper from the start. you just have to pick your shots carefully, because the shaking is a pattern. you cant just rely on your sniper all of the time. and just crouch! and plus, you do know that the pistol becomes the strongest gun in the game once you get it maxed out, right?

I wen tback to ME 1 recently and was playing in ym soldier class and wanted to do a long rage shot, holey crap I hate the sniper riffle, you have to upgrade it some much just to get it even a little sturdy and stabel and you can't hit crap with it Posted Image thats why I like the ME2 Mantis Sniper riffle better.Posted Image

By the time you hit midgame, it should be your favorite/only outdoor weapon. It just takes patience, just like in real life.

Kenetic Stabilizer 7 and a few points in Sniper (I have about 5 point in it), a little patience, and I'm finishing off Colosus (after warming them up with the Mako of course)

I will almost guarrentee that using Tungsten/Schredder at max level will beat either of these two options with a ScramrailX and Frictionless X.
Using exploding rounds greatly slows down your firing speed, and thus limits the damage.  At Insanity high levels the Explosive set up will not always kill your target allowing them to spam imunity and or be blown far enough away to have to be hunted down later.  Snowblind slows your firing, which would help your cooldown with dual Scrams but the scram/frictionless with Schredder/tungsten allows almost constant firing with great damage.

To be noted about Explosive, it does concussive force x500 but not true damage multiplier.  Maximum Tungsten/schredder adds around 40% more base damage, and doesn't intantly overheat your gun.

The best reason to use explosives is to watch the bodies fly, aka, it is fun.

That's why I normally sticked to Snowblind Rounds. With that setup, your weapon will almost never overheat and you still deal more than enough damage on every difficulty.
But for the Siege of the Citadel, always High Explosive Round, ... seeing those Geth flying towards Sovereign is just too good.

The sniper rifle takes time and a lot of patience to use especially with all that moving around while zoomed in (depending if it is a talent) over time through the game it does get easier because one some spots you will want to shot with a sniper rifle and with practice it will pay off

Yeah, I agree. It's not just the sniper rifle, every aspect about Mass Effect 2's gameplay is vastly superior of Mass Effect 1's.

Umm, no. Biotics got severely nerfed in ME2, they weren't even half as much fun as they were in ME1. Why do shields and armor block biotic levitation attacks? Makes no sense.

*just realized I replied to a 3 y/o post. well done*

Absurd being a nice way of saying it. Then again, Saren's bossfight is stupid without lift so...
