I'm new to the whole modding thing and have not really used any community content in a game before. How does it work? The community creates some content that is integrated into the main story and then other people can download and experience it too? Is that it?

How time consuming and difficult is the modding and creating of content? I'm from a programming background (.net) was interested in how it's all done and wouldn't mind having a go, but didn't want to be put off by jumping in the deep end, blind, if you see what I mean.

Fundamentally, you can either create something that modifies the original game or write your own stand-alone adventures.

If you want to modify the original game, you can modify the rules, change the story, add new areas, new items, skills, spells, companions, romances or quests, change the appearance of things in the game.....basically modify just about anything.

There are a few things you cannot do - you cannot change the GUI much and you cannot change some core playing mechanisms, like adding multi-level pathfinding.

You can also import content created externally - new music, new textures, new models (coming soon) and so on.

If you want to create your own stand-alone adventures, you can either place them in the DA:O setting, or in a completely different world.

Basically, your imagination is the primary limitation.   This is a very powerful toolset, and it is not easy to master.  Start small.
