Just bought the game on Steam. When I try to start DAO I get an error
saying "failed to detect supported video card" My card (Radeon 5850)
meets requirements and is detected fine in the DAO launcher. I have
uninstalled/reinstalled the latest card and DX drivers and continue to
get the error. Anyone able to help?.
I7 920 on win7 64.

Are you running a new (or clean) install of Windows 7? If so, you probably need to install the runtimes for DirectX 9.
(see details here: http://social.biowar...2604940#2605044
Also make sure you are running the latest drivers for your card.
If you have already done both of these then reinstalling the game MAY fix this.

Some versions of W7 have problems with certain games related with the graphic card detection or the graphic acceleration function.
I had the same problem with NWN2 a few months ago. All games working fine but that one. I have an ATI card too. The solution was importing some drivers from Windows Vista and using them instead of the W7 ones but I think that Microsoft released an update to solve this problem (at least for NVidia).
I have W7 and ATI card with all updates (without that weird W7- Windows Vista Patch) and everything works fine.

Ok discovered a bit more info. If I star the game from the launcher and turn EVERYTHING to off/minimum, I can launch the game. Once in the game I can turn all the settings back up to whatever I like and play without any problems. I have to repeat this procedure every time I play.
Very odd.

That gets us somewhere.
If you didn't choose the option that allows DirectX 9 to be installed when you install the game, then go here and look at the DirectX information. http://social.biowar...2604940#2605044
If you have the complete DirectX 9 runtimes on your system already then try these:
Try changing the settings as shown here: http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/2604940#2635902
If that doesn't work, then on the same settings check the option to run as administrator.
If it still doesn't work then the most likely cause is a problem with Catalyst & it would be worth checking the ATI forums.

Ok, now try this... when you have the game open go to Options and make sure your game resolution it set to exactly the same as your screen resolution. Save, and check if this makes a difference.

Aha! Please humor me a little longer and try this - reset your screen resolution to one that can match a game setting, then test. If my assumption is right we may well have identified the problem.

OK... I have no idea how but once I had the game launched I was able to select my native res, quit, select full screen and now everything seems fine? Bizarre.

Cool :-) Matching the game res to the screen res often (but not always) solves this kind of problem. I'm glad its working for you now.
