Couldn'y they just have had fewer companions in Awakenings? Then they could have worked more with those.

That being said, i would still probably buy the new Dragon Age because its Dragon Age and Bioware and Epic.

they may be counting on that type of loyality.

also this will likely be the last post since these types of threads are being locked.

To answer the topic, the answer is "Never. Not even when pigs fly and hell freezes over."

The title is pretty self explanatory.  Comments from the developers indicate that dragon age 2 will use the Awakening conversation system or something akin to it.  Allegedly the original is not cost effective, though considering how successful the game was it seems to me it may be to ensure they can get the sequel out quickly.

I find this disheartening I love Origins its in my top 10 or maybe 5 games of all time.  The reason I enjoyed it so much was because the characters had real depth and the the conversation system allowed me to fully create my character's personality in a way that was fuller and more nuanced than other games, and because it allowed me to feel like I created real relationships between the characters.
I liked Awakening for what it was but its system does not deliver this I always felt like something was missing, like I was restrained, frankly the new system is broken and the effort of having to take multiple characters to the same cites to get them to talk was burdensome, not to mention being able to go up to npc's and talk at any time and not my own party is asinine.  In the original I used certain people for main quests and others or side quests, I used everybody a decent amount and got to know them fairly well, I should not be expected to play through the game multiple times to get to know the different characters.

I hate to say it but I highly doubt it that I will buy the sequel if they use the awakening system, other people have said the same on these boards, so I was wondering what other peoples thought on the matter are.

Hi Leon,

I probably will be incredibly disappointed and not buy the game. Well it could be a deal breaker for me....I guess I would wait until I read more about the game then and see if it would be worth it for me. I really can't believe they would do that, I think the awakenings system must have been so unpopular with so many...I just loved the conversation system in origins! Image IPB

yes, i would buy it. I am sure that the game will be great, even though there are many things worrying me about it. I will just be disappointed that the game is flawed because someone thought that certain things (like the awakening conversation system. which is actually good... if it was combined with the origins system) would be good ideas.

I certainly prefer the DA:O conversation system over the Awakenings one, but it won't be a deal breaker for me. After all, I enjoyed Mass Effect despite the fact my companions were mutes other than on the Normandy.

Recall that Awakenings is just an expansion/dlc. It understandably had a much smaller budget than the original, and the developers probably did not want to pay to have the number/depth of dialog trees as the did in Origins. I fully expect the Origins system to be in the game.

i think they did say that with dragon age 2 they want to follow the style of awakening

If it goes Awakening-style, definite no.

Or maybe once its heavily discounted. Basically for me it would be a mega tough sell.

If they ONLY use the DAA system, hell NO. If they mix it with the original, DEFINITELY!

I hope Bioware realizes alot of what they tried in Awakenings did not work,  Awakenings is the first Bioware game without compelling characters and plot and I think the dialog system has alot to do with that.

I hope they use a combination of DA and Awakenings with objects triggering conversations but you still being able to talk to them in camp.

It won't effect my decision to buy but would prefer more DAO conversation than Awakening where you have to look for landmarks. Some landmarks triggering conversations are fine but I hope that it will be in the minority.

Even for an expansion I felt the the companions felt more distant in Awakening - the camp in DAO and speaking with your companions was a real pleasure

Yes, I never had a problem with the Awakening system. Not a big deal for me if you don't have to spend a half hour cycling through all the companions dialogue every time you get back to camp. Imagine if Tolkein had written LOTR in that way - a page of Frodo talking to Sam, a page of Frodo talking to Merry, a page of Frodo talking to Pippin, a page of Frodo talking to Gandalf...every 50 pages. The Awakening system has the ability to flow much more naturally into a story.

Admittedly, some deeper character development would be welcome.

A blend of both would be nice, but Awakenings system ain't bad. I liked it (am I the only one? :( )

no, there are definitely more people who liked it too. I would like it too, IF it also included the origins system

I personally would like to see a system highly based on the current relationship. Revealing new conversations based on what you already know about them is much better than everyone knowing the everything about every character. I think thats what made Leliana an interesting character, for example. If DA2 uses the Awakening format, I will be very dissappointed, but I would still buy the game and keep an open mind

Yes but I won't be happy. I may delay buying at release though and wait for a Steam sale or something.

I won't kid myself; I'll buy it either way. But I'm hoping it's more of a mix of the DAO and Awakening systems. DAO's was better overall, but it was nice being able to have conversations that relate to something current and timely. Several times in DAO I wished I could have turned to my companions after (or before) a major decision and go "so...what do you think?"

But Awakening's system alone was way too confining.

I hate the Awakening system. A major step backwards. Yes, the DA:O system could use some improvements, but this is not the way to go.

That said, I'd probably buy DA2 anyway and be annoyed with the system every time I played. Just cause I love Bioware RPGs and the DA world so much.
