For those of us considering the creation of stand-alone mods, will it be possible to create our own Origins in the toolset? I haven't seen this addressed elsewhere.

You mean you want a stand-alone mod, with a number of different origins, just like the game? Sure, it is doable. In fact, you could have done that in NWN/NWN2 as well.
The easiest way to think of it is just as a set of different starting locations (and perhaps different cutscene at the beginning) depending on the race/gender/background/whatever.

I'm aiming for three, but the plan is to make one to start with, build in the others' effects to the main quest, then add them once everything else is sorted. They are a luxury, after all - I don't expect people to play more than one per player.

Usually just making a mod is such as massive undertaking that people usually do not worry with multiple starts (or endings for that matter). If you really want to do it, more power to you. However you might want to be careful to try not to bite off more than you can handle.

On the other hand, if you're making a stand-alone mod for beginning level characters, at least one new origin might be entirely appropriate.

Interesting Idea, but it would require a large number of people, mostly due to the fact that an 'origin' is technically the size of a full game main quest, so it would take a strong team to pull that off.
