I'm curious about other players RPG styles in general, and in ME.

RPG "essentials" for my play style include:_character looks and clothing, character background, open world designs, and a lot of ways to buy and sell goods-- clothing, minerals etc.__________.

These help me get into the character and game and help me make character actions be "sensible". (at least in my mind)  Please understand ... I love ME and ME2. this isn't a rant.  Also I am fairly new to the RPG genre so I have limited experience.

WARNING: wall of text follows -- expands on the above. read or not at your discretion.

To me, role play is all about my character and his/her interaction with others in the universe.  Combat,  decisions, conversations Para/renegade interrupts etc are all "decided" depending on my characters looks, skills, viewpoints etc. Various characters I've created for ME have been as varied as

- outrageous flirt/ladies man
- stoic, self-righteous
- Alliance soldier to the core
- insubordinate/irreverent
- tolerant/intolerant of other species/slavery and slavers etc.

Secondly I really like open world designs rather than linear, so I can go anywhere and do anything at any time. The world/ universe needs a functional economy where my character can both buy and sell items collected.

Details:
Character creation: My goal is to create a unique character that "fits" the universe and their back-story.
-- Appearance:  I spend a lot of time getting my character to look exactly how I want them to look.  This includes gender, hair styles, body types , and clothing/armor(hint to BioWare).  The best creation system I have seen is from Tiger Woods golf (I know - NOT RPG I mean the creation part), with Oblivion coming in a close second (unrestricted talent and skill selections - sort of -).

-- Character back-story/motivations/psych profiles.  The spacer, colonist, earthborn + sole survivor, war hero, ruthless choices are just the start point for me.  I like to expand upon the choice set I make with a short biography I write down. I try to give each character a fitting life motto.
Examples: "Not on MY watch you SOB" and
"A girl can handle anything the galaxy throws at her with the right make-up and a Widow sniper rifle".

-- Shopping!! for some reason I like to go shopping... not just for upgrades.  In ME I wish they had clothing shops and armourers. (and a way to sell minerals).  And ... Sharlize Shepard needs new shoes! and TATTS, and Jewelry and a space hamster (oh, got that one)

I will stop now ...
Your turn.
