I wasn't impressed. Worthless. Keep your five bucks, no sword as promised, the game crashed and it crashed, and it crashed somemore - it crashed three times on me. Extremely, disappointing. No sword, or achievement came up. Extremely ruff transition to different areas. Only one achievement unlocked. Half the time I couldn't even enthrall other darkspawn into my party, game wouldn't let me. Couldn't use firebombs in Alienage, even though journal told me to use them for my quest. Hardly any loot to pick-up. Pointless. Hurlock Vangard never levels up. What is the point then? Camera wouldn't turn to allow full view of battlefield. This dlc, wouldn't even work!!!!! Figures.

I'd hate to be a company that had such an award winning RPG of 2009 and then come up with this crap which will send DA right to the Johnny Crapper! It's crap, don't waste your money, I just blew 5 bucks on very disappointing dlc. They came up with this instead of a proper patch!!!!!?????   DA and all dlc and expansions could be so much more, but they've allowed their creativity to flush down the johnny crappers instead of following what a RPG should really be with all dlc and expansions.  What a shame.

Heck, even greywardens.com shows most players ID with being a Grey Warden. I wasn't impressed. Complete waste of my time and money, nothing more. This dlc doesn't increase the lore to the game or anything. Worthless. I can't believe they put this garbage out instead of a patch, then gave themselves a nice long credit movie at the end. I couldn't believe it, once again no game ending save!  Instead, "The Team"  giving themselves a pat on the back with a credit roll, but no save!!!!  WTH?????

Killing my former party members left a bad taste in my mouth. I gave them the benefit-of-doubt. I'll be very careful on what DLC I buy from now on. Posted Image  Major disappointment.  At least with RTO, you got some dialogue.

Edit:  I did reload a recently saved game and I did get the sword.  Still not worth it in my opinionPosted Image.

Eh, I just had my Emissary lob a fireball at the ground right below the barrels and it worked fine, since it's AoE.

I as the Hurlock Vanguard should be able to use the firebombs that you pick up as loot to use on those barrels and blocked gates to enter areas for battle, see your journal entry for these.  I couldn't even use them to fire bomb the Alienage Tree.  Unless you have a emissary in your party you can't do it.

You can't even level up the Hurlock Vanguard that you are playing as, so what is the point of this DLC then?  The game does it for you.  Posted Image  No big difference between Grey Wardens VS Darkspawn.  Same talent tree, what is the point?  If you're into hack n slash, buy it, if you're into the lore and actual RPG, don't bother.

(Full of spoilers)

Pretty good overall just wish there was more at the end explaining how Alistair got to that point. I mean judging from what I saw he chose to side with the Templars, side with Branka, and sided with the Werewolves. He also according to the Leliana codex was in a relationship with her. It would be interesting to get to read something or get cutscenes showing what got him to make those decisions. Either that or a cutscene with Duncan explaining what happened at the end explaining why it was important your Warden survives.

Mostly I guess what surprised me is that Alistair was in the city waiting to defend it. Which in the game you are arriving just as it's been overtaken with your army.

Did anyone get an autosave at the end of chronicles? Bioware sure doesn't like those saves at the end.

Yeah it would've been great to get some scenes of Alistair doing things his way, but getting all the voice actors to come back would've had a big impact on the cost of the DLC.

Did anybody else feel like pond scum while playing this? Honestly, I thought slaying Gorim and Teagan was bad enough, but then when Alistair sees Leliana and Morrigan lying there dead, I was just like "make it stop! make it stop!"

I said I was not going to buy this. I lied! Gah. My curiosity always gets the best of me. Which I am sure the game publishers count on people like me. I know I would.  Regardless of what I think, they got my $5.. Which is the whole point right? Not that we may actually want something truly enjoyable.... Or something that had a single drop of thought put into it?

So.....  Onto the opinion part of this $5 mistake of mine.

First off. This was utterly boring. Wait!.. Boring would leave room for my imagination. No. this makes boring look fun!

Ranging from pointless, cheap, lack of creativity, an insult to our gaming palate, and a complete disregard for good taste. I can honestly say, this romp in the Darkspawn Chronicles Cesspool is a waste of money. More than the pack of Sea Monkeys I bought when I was 6.

Live and learn. Subway sells the 12 inch sub for $5. Next time I'll take a freind to lunch.

Well... you knew what it was when you bought it. If you were expecting more than what was advertised then that would be a mistake.

I do understand the sentiment that it's boring though. I mean you're playing an rpg with a pregenerated character (who doesn't even have a unique look, though we knew that before we bought it), who doesn't level up, doesn't have any dialogue,, and has a very boring skillset. I spent the whole time controlling my Ogre and later Emissary because the Vanguard himself is very generic.

But despite that, I'm a sucker for alternate reality stuff.

Its like Wade is under control by Harren and he breaks away whenever he can! LMAO

I had a ton of fun playing it. Seeing all the familiar faces and how their lives would have turned out without the warden was really interesting to me. I would've liked a few more cutscenes maybe, before the major fights (like with the former party members) but all in all it was very well done (easily worth the $5 imo).

It's also a bit more challenging in the gameplay dept. Actually, I did my first run through on Nightmare and was forced to do a few reloads to keep my Ogre alive for the unlock (something I haven't had to do in vanilla DA in a looong time). I'd definitely recommend it!

I wasn't going to get it at all, but since the spouse wanted it I decided to play it. Boring as hell. I was thinking, "alright, let's get to Alistair already," but even that was anti-climactic. The only thing that got a little snicker out of me was when I looked at the emissary's approval bar and it said "Barely Tolerates."

My husband will probably like it, since he plays silly MMOs. If that's your thing, it's probably worth your five bucks. I mean, compared to what we paid for Awakening, the snicker over the emissary was a bargain I suppose.

How do you even raise your fellow darkspawns' approval?

Who knows?  Not like they can tell you. You kill people.  You let them kill people.  The shriek liked the bottle of wine I gave him.

I got max approval on the Shriek and Ogre (before he gets separated and his approval resets) just by killing stuff. Named NPCs, usually. Never gave anyone a single "battle trophy" because I didn't see any, just loot.

Side note: Are there any two-handed users you can recruit? If not, why on earth did they put in the Forge-Master's Hammer as loot? And my Vanguard looked really strange using a Redcliffe shield and saw blade.

I will never understand this whole mentality of "I can't kill a bunch of icons on the screen that I made a character to travel with!  It's too evil!"  I enjoyed it quite a bit.  I just wish I had been the one to get the killing blow on Morrigan, instead of some hurlock that wasn't even my thrall.

Sarah1281 wrote...

Killing things, especially elites and bosses.  There's also somewhere around 6 - 10 battle trophies, aka gifts.  Each one gives +20 the first time you give a thrall a gift.  Might be +20 every single time, but I only gave each one one gift.

Some of the mooks had two handers. Also Yeah I had the same set up, I lol'd.

Mostly though i just ran around as the shriek, i think my character died about 40 times during that... never bothered to really look at him. power trio of shriek, ogre, and emissary FTW?

I saw a few of them.  I tried to entrall a couple; but, like I said above, some of them wouldn't allow me to enthrall them even when I was down to one or two party members.   I did the same thing, Redcliffe Shield and Saw Blade.  I only found one battle trophy, and alot of times the game wouldn't allow me to pick up loot from dead citizens, or even other dead darkspawn.  I had a hard time with clickable items or any buttons, they just wouldn't work.

The only possible lore question is the Wade and Herren scene.  I took charge of my emissary and did the most damage with them.  Extremely generic.  Archdemon communicates telepathic?  My impression which I already had an idea of the communication between archdemon and horde followers.

Kind of wonder if they missed an opportunity here...

An alternate explanation to this DLC could have been that your character was captured at the tower of Ishar at the first seige at Ostagar

and made into darkspawn

this could have allowed them to sneak in a "darkspawn origin"

Except that you can't be made into a darkspawn. The way I understand it, those overcome by darkspawn taint either die or become ghouls and die later or become Broodmothers. True darkspawn are born from Broodmothers, while ghouls are an entirely separate category, closer to corrupted beasts.

Dalish PCs have get an interesting peek at what happens to those who become ghouls (the only thing interesting about this origin) later in the game, when Tamlen shows up in the Shriek ambush of your camp. He has become very like the Shrieks, but hasn't actually become one of them.

No, I laughed, it was awesome.

I thought this was going to suck, but I went in with super low expectations. Best way to go into it IMO, as I had fun. Worth 5 bucks, but no more, so I got what I paid for. Took me about an hour and a half to complete.

Same with me, I ranted before, I swore I won't buy it - and did it anyway, out of curiosity, because I had the little hope that the codex entries might be worth it and tell a story. They aren't, they don't, they are mocking Origins.
