With the lack of support for the consoles from Bioware, I am thinking of buying the PC version.  I was wondering if my computer would be able to run DA:O and DA:A smoothly. Here are the details:

Manufacturer/Model: HP Media Center PC with Vista (model#8530f)

Processor: AMD Phenom™ 9550 Quad-Core Processor 2.20 GHz

Memory (RAM): 5 GB

System Type: 64 Bit

Memory Cards: NVIDIA GeForce 9400 (GeForce 8200 + GeForce 9300 GE)
                             NVIDIA GeForce 9300 GE

If the memory card needs to be replaced, any recommendations for a new one that will work with my computer? Thanks.

You'll probably need to upgrade your video card. Get 8800 GTS if you are on a budget, they are still quite powerful and probably go for very cheap now. You'll be able to play everything on max. I wouldn't switch to the PC version due to the lack of support though, because it's not like PC version gets patches every other day. There are still crapload of bugs in the game. I would, however, switch from console to PC because it's a much superior experience in my opinion. I just can't imagine playing DA:O without a keyboard and tactical view. Besides, you can mod the crap out of the game and finally make it look beautiful.

I will check out the 8800 GTS and others to see what will be the best choice in value and reliability. I did a quick google search showed the 8800 GTS for over $300 or more; my price range is $100-$200 though if a more expensive card will last several years, I might just get that.

I forgot the mods and such which are great bonuses, but the game play is more important in my opinion.

You should never make such statements without including the caution that such video cards require a far more powerful and better quality power supply than the averagge branded PC has in it, which changes the total cost hugely, what with a decent 500 watt power supply having a cost ion the $80 to $100 range, depending on sales and rebates.   Do we even know what a "Media Center" case looks like?  Is it large enough for a High End video to even fit into it?

There are a wide array of Radeons and Geforces that were designed to be able to run well on ordinary power supplies, including a particular "Low Current" Geforce 9800 GT model, but you can also move into the Dx11 world for a low price, by switching to a Radeon, such as the HD 5750 (I'm not 100% certain that one will run on a PSU with less than 350 watts of rated power, so the HD 5670 might be a better choice there).  Incidentally, HP sells a bunch of shrunken-down PCs that don't even take the full-height video cards, let alone a great long High End size.

The available choices in "Low Profile" size video cards has gotten very small lately, with most of those available being Low End, and the few Mainline ones getting on up in age, so lacking in modern features.

Here is the latest "Bang for a Buck" comparison at Toms Hardware, the page with the HD 5750 on it (not one that is available in the Low Profile form factor).

P. S. Pleae IGNORE any misinformed types who will try to convince you to forego the needed upgrade.  They have no conception of what games such as this one are supposed to run like, and look like.  The bottom end of the old Geforce 8n00 line was terrible, and even on a thinner die wafer, it is still awful.  They can't play Mass Effect 2 at a resolution anyone would want to use, for instance.

(All of the Geforce 9n00 cards, except two, are renamed from the year before, not new cards that year at all.)

Upgrade the video card???? Nonsense. I play Dragon Age at 1280 x 800 on max settings with only 3 GB RAM, 256 MB GeForce FX 8600M GT, and a Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.5 Ghz). Phss.

You are running a quad core with 5 GB RAM and dual video cards. Don't let anybody tell you that you need to upgrade.

The PC version is the only one I would use. One is for the mods, and two there are work arounds for many bugs. Caak7i, your PC should be able to run the game, although depending on your resolution you want with the bells and whistles you may run into some problems. My suggestion, for what it's worth would be to upgrade your video cards if you intend to play above 1280 x 800 resolution.

Gorath's right - there's no way you'll be able to play it with a 256mb 9300GS, even with low settings at a low resolution.

Before you start thinking about upgrading, it'd be helpful if we had a few pointers. What resolution is your monitor, and how low are you willing to go in terms of in-game settings?

Bear in mind that your power supply is the limiting factor (350w). I wouldn't recommend trying to upgrade a PSU on your HP, as it's highly unlikely that you'll be able to use a full sized PSU (been there, done that, ended up rebuilding it in a new case).

The good news is that BFG has a 9800GT with a 350w PSU requirement, and it's not too expensive:

http://www.newegg.co...3-186-_-Product

Most 9800GTs need a 400w PSU, so be careful if you decide to go for a different brand.

Otherwise you might get away with a 5670 (I think it needs a 400w psu officially).

The current resolution for my monitor is 1280 x 1024 with a refresh rate of 60 hertz. I think that is the default settings for this computer. As for as low as I can go, I can change the resolution in a few seconds before I play the game though if possible I would like to keep the resolution as it is.

I have an account with Newegg so there would be no problem ordering from them.

Just don't jump up to Windows 7 yet. I run 64-bit W7, and all I get is the splash screen and then BSOD.

don't do this if you plan on buying DLC for this game

I have heard that they lifted the expiration date for DLC if that is what you meant for not buying DLC for the game.

Dragon Age PC is superior to console versions in every aspect, especially graphics and gameplay. (all that ****ing abut pc gaming dying is really funneh in this context)

And what dr Danger said is true if you wanna play with resolution like his or lower, but if you wanna play on bigger resolution you need to upgrade. For 1600 and above you need graphic card with at least 512MB; 768MB or 1GB if you wanna play on max settings. 260GTX is pretty decent. I'm playing on max with core 2 duo 3Ghz, 2 GB RAM and 260GTX (res. 1920x1080 16:9), gameplay is pretty smooth, there's some stuttering during cutscenes but it doesn't matter and I don't give a damn about it. Don't buy cheap and weak card, you will only waste your money. And if DA is the one and only game you wanna play on PC, don't bother.

Don't let the lack of support be the reason to switch to PC. We get even less support from Bioware and EA on PC. At minimum if you still are don't get 7 64 bit quite yet, well if it is only for Bioware games and KOTOR II since they are the only games I can't seem to get working on Windows 7 64 bit.
