Howdy folks,

Look, I know there's been a ton of talk about what's better, the 360 version or the PC version, and I've read through a few of those topics. What I'm really hoping to accomplish with this topic is use the gathered experience of what seems to be a forum full of RPG fanatics, people who (like me) played the BG games, the NWN games, and maybe even a few RPGs on the 360 (er... Fable? anything else?), and make a final decision as to which course I pursue. I think this might be helpful for all of us forum newbs who are flocking in here now that time to decide is pretty much here.

So here's my situation. I have a 1.5 year old Macbook Pro, which is a decent computer but struggled to run The Witcher with anything other than fairly basic graphics settings. I also have a shiny new 360. Now, I loved the BG series; really, really loved it. I especially loved how tactical combat felt because I could pause, move around, think about it, etc. The immediate move, then, is for me to sacrifice any hope of good graphics and go for the PC version.

Now, while the 360 version may not have an isometric view, it will look a whole ton better than the PC version will for me. The question is really one of whether the gameplay will "feel" the same, given the limited view perspective and the inherent clumsiness of a controller input when playing a tactical RPG.

Here's what I'm hoping: there are probably people on this board who have played one or both versions, who have a similar background (if not a comparable situation), who can weigh in on the "feel" of the 360 version vs. the PC version. Im buying this game, one way or another; help me and Im sure many others find the right version to enjoy the game.

Thanks guys; sorry to bring this topic up yet again.

Other than graphics and character control, Bioware has stated that their is nothing different between each platform. It would really depend on your playing style I think. Do you want a more up close and in your face action game? I would say Xbox. Do you want longevity that user created content can provide? I would say PC.

Criminy, didn't even think about user-generated content. argh, that's a GREAT argument for PC. Thanks!

i dont know why anyone would play the 360 version if they could run it on a PC. now if they cant run it on their PC, that's a different story.

Depends really on what your tolerance level for user content is. Bioware has plans to make the more popular user CC available to Xbox and Playstation owners through their respective networks. Nothing final from what I had heard last, but I cannot see it not happening.

It also depends how high your tolerance for crummy game performance is, if your Macbook is running it in 'Picture Flipbook mode' then it might get on your nerves after a while and even effect how well you are able to play the game. At least the 360 version will run the game smoothly with the graphical performance of a decent PC.

PC for sure. It may look not that good right now, but eventually you'll upgrade your PC and you can take DA:O for a new spin :) It may look nicer on the Xbox, but a few years from now you won't benefit from better hardware.

How did the Character Creation tool ran on your PC? Was it acceptable? It's a solid, basic test.

Also, like someone mentioned, there'll be community made content, which is a big plus to the PC version.

I'm torn. I'm sick to death of Windows Vista ruining my gaming experiences, but the idea of user content is also tempting (although I never really found it worth my time in Neverwinter Nights). My TV is much larger than my computer screen, and it works every time.

I think I just convinced myself to go with the 360 version. Huh.

The simple fact you lose tactical view and being able to pan the camera around the map on the 360, is reason enoughf or me to go PC, even if I wouldn't get as good of graphics (can always upgrade computers later).

I have said PC every time, and will continue to do so.

Seriously it isn't even a comparison. Even if you were to ignore the graphics AND the camera (why would you ignore the tactical camera?!), just look at this site. It allows people to meet up so they can work on exciting projects - new adventures and modules that will allow a DA player to pretty much get quality gaming for hundreds of hours (I know because I played NWN for 450+ hours due to this). The Xbox 'may' get a small selection of this content.

So Xbox:

- weaker graphics

- no tactical camera

- no access to a massive amount of inevitable community material from modders - skins, modules, weapons, armours, tweaks etc - and Bioware community gamers are one of the most talented there are (see NWN).

Not really a tough choice!

On the other hand, if you get a PC copy and later upgrade your machine, it will feel like a whole new game. If your current machine is bad enough Posted Image

To me, the loss of tactical camera isn't that much of a loss. I see no point in trying pull the camera all the way out in this game. With all the action and animations going on, I want to be up close and personal. The fact that I love my TV and my couch is another big plus. 360 copy for me, please.

To me it's all about gameplay. I am interested to see how both play. I think I will have TONS of fun on both platforms ( er PC and console)! Honestly I think the console version will appeal to the more casual gamer out there (not that there isn't difficulty in it or anything). The PC version will probably appeal to the more Hard Core fan. Bottom line is what everyone else has said before: Go with what style suits you.

For me, sometimes I am HC, sometimes I am casual. I am very impressed with the game on both fronts so far. Everything in the gameplay and review videos has me doing the happy dance! :D

I can respect people getting it for a console. There are many reasons to so. But saying you want to play from your couch or on your big screen TV...those aren't really good reasons. Wireless keyboard and mouse will allow you to play from your couch and most video cards these days have connectors that will connect to your TVs. So, you can play from your couch on your big screen TV with the PC version.

Then again, if your PC doesn't have the capability and you aren't planning on upgrading any time soon...well, getting it on a console is the way to go.

That can be a bit tough if your PC is in different room than your TV and couch. And it's really hard to play from couch, even with a wireless keyboard and mouse. Just sayin' :)

Yeah, I didn't think about that because my TV is on a desk right next to my computer. Plus, I don't have a couch.

Personally, I prefer the bioware games on the 360. I bought both kotor and ME on the 360 (xbox for kotor) and PC and enjoyed the 360 version of both more. I don't think there is any real technical justification for that experience ... they just feel like console games to me. A little bit like the added complexity for the PC is unnecessary and tends to get in the way of the purity of the game. I donno. I will definitely buy DA:O for both the 360 and the PC anyway.

That's a good point hOnOr; I liked ME for the PC better, but I loved the KOTOR games on my xbox. i guess it all depends on whether those crazy canadians can map the console as well as they did for KOTOR, and I've seen nothing to suggest otherwise!

I have a 360 and a very good PC and i will play the 360-Version. Why? Controller, High-Def TV and Couch. If the "tactical view" would be anywhere near an essential asset to the game they would have left it in. The "tactical view" is a nod to us oldtime-BG-Players, nothing more, because fixed isometric views where the only view available at that time for a game like this. That was nice then but time has moved on and i want a more hands-on approach to my gaming and the visceral battle in DA delivers just that. And for user-generated content i have just one word: overrated. I rather wait for Bioware to cherrypick the best of them or i just buy their own expansions because frankly, i don't have the time to plow through all the user-generated crap to find one possible nugget.

They feel like console games because that's what they are - the PC versions are both ports, just as DAO will be a port on the consoles. ME PC's interface was okay (apart from the cumbersome inventory system) but with KOTOR they didn't really do much other than adding a mouse pointer to tailor the interface to PC controls. It didn't even have any kind of toolbar, which has been a standard in CRPGs well before KOTOR, instead you had to tediously click on the up and down arrows just to select different items, feats or powers.

I'll start off by saying that I dislike consoles, but that because they are so limited. However I can afford a nice PC that will run any game well.

In your case though since you already have a 360 and your Mac book is weak I would say get the 360 version. You will probably have alot more fun with the game and you won't have to deal with any software issues. You can always buy the PC version later when you can afford a PC that will be able to run the game at higher settings.

To put it another way. Do you want your first time playing the game to be degraded due to poor performance? Go witht he 360 version and get the PC version in a year or two.
