The whole what-if scenario idea was great in theory but the execution could have gone so much better. Storytelling is where Bioware excels and, as most people know, the Darkspawn Chronicles had little to none of it. We're not looking for darkspawn with complex personalities (though an Architect appearence would have been welcomed), but the DLC was basically a strategy-based slaughterfest.
While having party members as enemies was a great idea, the only time I ever really felt emotion was (minor spoiler) at the final cutscene where Alistair realised his friends were dead and he had failed. As for the other characters, how can I feel for them when they die uninteresting deaths from some random genlock or blight wolf? In my opinion each character death deserved its own dramatic cutscene, e.g. Zevran getting stabbed and seeing the elf alienage tree burn in front of him as he falls to his knees. Having the fights be one-on-one would also have made it more dramatic, though considering the context of the battle this is basically unfeasible.
Apart from characters, there were other area the plot could have been improved. It would have been nice if we were given better (and longer) opening/ending cutscenes. It would have been more dramatic to start the DLC with the death of your original character, and it would have been more rewarding if the vanguard was personally rewarded or acknowledged by the archdemon at the end. Also, what-if timelines can be quite useful in answering questions in the canon timeline. So much about the darkspawn and the archdemon could have been revealed, but alas it was a wasted opportunity. I think about the darkspawn in exactly the same way as I did before the DLC. What's more, the alternate timeline could have answered a few more of its own questions. Judging from what I saw (golems, werewolves), Alistair must have made the most evil decisions possible, which means more events must have been drastically altered than just the Siege of Denerim. Fleshing out the alternate fates of the other companions wouldn't hurt either. Future possibilities much?
Would also have been nice to give this timeline some context instead of it just being a what-if. Maybe making it a Warden dream or prediction of the future (magic), or some other plot twist BioWare's known for delivering.
The DLC's title is the most innaproppriate use of the word "Chronicles" I have ever seen. It's far too short for that and doesn't have much of a story. On that note, restricting the DLC to the Siege of Denerim wasn't a great idea. Ideally it should have consisted of several encounters taking place at diffrent times in the spread of the Blight. It's technically not too late to change this; BioWare could simply make this the first (or chronologically last) in a series of DLC about this scenario, because as an idea it's brilliant. Some people probably wouldn't want this, but how can BioWare improve upon this concept if they're not given another go at it? I know they can get it right.
It's probably not even too late to change or add better start/end cutscene. After all, Valve recently changed the ending for "Portal" in a recent patch. Maybe I'm just getting hopeful now though...
And yet despite all these complaints, I generally enjoyed it and would consider playing it again in future. For me it was well worth $5. Call me crazy, I'm a Dragon Age freak.
