1. You can only use them once for each squadmate

2. Specific squadmates will chip in IF you have them there that instant

A lot of potential dialogue is lost if you're required to know which squadmates you need to bring.

Yeah, that was part of my problem with them.  That and that they only appear on hub worlds while my squad remains pretty silent during actual missions/quests.  Also that I'm always hearing about ones I haven't found, like the on for Jack in the bathroom of one of the night clubs... that was news to me >.<''.  I like to hear what they have to say since there is so little dialogue to begin with any bit of backstory or comentary is welcome but I feel like I have to go hunting for them sometimes.

Jack also has a line with the Avina on the lower level of the Citadel.

^ I did snipe your post ;).  Scissors are for Quarians with tummy aches :D.

And to the Jack/Avina comment I say.... AUGH!!!! :crying:  Honestly I should just see if some one has made a list of where these things are... it makes me sad like I have to compute pi all day or something :crying:.  Thanks for letting me know about that though, I'll go try and find it next time I play.

i'm sorry Ecael. But the real forum sniper on the ME forums is quite obvious. In fact, hes on a platform not to far away from our current position.

I don't think anyone's ever tried to make a list. That would definitely take a while, considering there's about 30000 sound files to sort through.

In ME1, when people whined about elevators, they weren't complaining about elevators, they were complaining about elevator rides that took excessive amounts of time, a.k.a. long load times. These are still present in ME2, and so every time in an interview when they said "yeah, no more elevators guys!", they probably all went back to the offices and had a big laugh about it. Yep, they're gone, and replaced with stupid schematics of elevators or ship orbital flight paths, or line-drawings of airlocks cycling or some such rubbish.

It left a very bad taste in my mouth.

The hub worlds are flat in ME 2 with a lack of loading times. The only time you have loading times are on new areas that you transfer to which is pretty much the same loading screen you get when going into a building or a complex in the first ME game.

The airlock and the Normandy elevators on the other hand were replaced by loading screens.

I timed how long it took to do a Normandy land-and-return side quest in both games, though. Ironically, ME1 took twice as long not because of the walking distance or the Citadel's size (which was the same because of Citadel Rapid Transit) but because of the elevators and ME1 loading screens.

The elevators had to be much longer than the actual loading times to make up for the slowest PCs (as ME1 would eventually be released for that platform).

ME1, Normandy at Mass Relay -> Citadel -> Wards Access -> Back to Normandy Galaxy Map
1) Mass Relay CGI cutscene
2) Click Citadel, Dock
3A) Undocking cutscene from other city OR
3B) LOADING (Normandy traveling screen)
4) Landing Cutscene, unskippable
5) Run to airlock
6) LOADING (Picture of Mass Relay screen), Select Crew screen
7) Elevator, unskippable
8) Citadel Rapid Transit to Wards Access entrance in Presidium
9) LOADING (Picture of Citadel)
10) Run to Wards Access Elevator
11) Elevator, unskippable
12) Wards Access, at Zabaleta
13) Elevator, unskippable
14) Run to Citadel Rapid Transit back to C-Sec
15) LOADING (Picture of Citadel)
16) Elevator, unskippable
17) Normandy -> Decontamination in progress
18) At Galaxy Map

*Stopwatch Timer: 7 minutes, 23 seconds*

Elevators used: 4 times
Loading screens: 4 times (does not include the 4 short 'Loading' boxes each time elevator was used)
Pauses to autosave: 4 times

ME2, Normandy at Mass Relay -> Citadel -> Back of Dark Star Lounge -> Back to Normandy Galaxy Map
1) Mass Relay CGI cutscene
2) Hover over to Citadel, Dock
3) Landing Cutscene, skipped
4) LOADING (Normandy schematic screen), Select Crew screen
5) Shuttle Cutscene, skipped
6) Citadel Rapid Transit to Level 28
7) LOADING (Weird spinning lock screen)
8) Run to Dark Star Lounge, back
9) Run to Citadel Rapid Transit
10) Citadel Rapid Transit to Normandy
11) LOADING (Another weird Normandy screen)
12) At Galaxy Map

*Stopwatch Timer: 2 minutes, 55 seconds*

Elevators used: 0
Loading screens: 3 times
Pauses to autosave: 0 (doesn't pause when autosaving)

The elevators had to be much longer than the actual loading times to make up for the slowest PCs (as ME1 would eventually be released for that platform).

And somehow, they still managed to botch up the texture loading something chronic, despite all that extra time.

Why couldn't they just do it as fast as possible, then do the pause-with-loading for the slow computers? Or just have the elevators go for as long as it took to load?

Mass Effect 1 wasn't as efficiently coded back then. Not at the fault of BioWare or anything, as it was a brand new genre for them working on a third-party engine. My laptop rarely overheats playing Mass Effect 2 - the elevator/rapid transit screens load in about 3 seconds - but Mass Effect 1 (and Dragon Age, with BioWare's own engine) will often cause it to burn up. I bought a $50 aluminum laptop cooler to keep at home just so I could keep playing all of those games.

So is there any compelling reason why they couldn't have kept elevators w/ banter but had shorter loading times and thus shorter rides?

I must have got really lucky.

The only elevators that ever took a little while, and I mean a little while, were the council chambers to presidium and c-sec to docking bay. They weren't that long at all. Everything else was only a few seconds, enough for a news report or some quick banter.

Maybe my brain is wired differently but I really loved the elevators and everything they came with them.

Regardless, I think the suggested ideas are great.

Squad banter was something that was lacking in ME2 and had the potential to really showcase some of the characters. Jack / Miranda - Tali / Legion - Garrus / Grunt - Mordin / Grunt. There is a lot of history, confrontations and morals dying to be aired from these characters.

Sure, especially in reference to the Airlock as that would be well suited (and something that should be brought back).

The notorious elevator glitches.

Of course, now there's the glitch of levitating in the air and/or not being able to move, but I've never been able to avoid that entirely in BioWare games.

Ok, so there's about 11,000 sound files for the squadmates from the non-DLC Mass Effect 2.

Anyone know how to extract the dialogue from the DLC?

Who here thinks this is a good idea?

Anybody have any idea to make this a better idea?

How about being able to buy Squadmates ice cream on the citadel for a squad banter cut-scene?

oooh! Squad banter cut-scenes!!

I can see it now, Tali and Grunt with an ice-cream cone, Grunt holding 3 and a dozen tucked in one arm.

Good idea

It seems threads aren't popular when everyone is in agreement.

Therefore:
-ME1 sucks, ME2 sucks, DAO sucks, DAA sucks, Garrus sucks, Tali sucks, Liara sucks, Kaidan sucks, Ashley sucks, Wrex sucks, Zaeed sucks, Legion sucks, Samara sucks, Morinth sucks, Mordin sucks, Miranda sucks, Grunt sucks, Jacob sucks, Thane sucks, Jack sucks and Kasumi sucks.

-Mass Effect is a Gears of War dating simulation trying to be like Final Fantasy meets Pokemon, and would fail as a movie.

Discuss.

:wizard:

That is a very good point you make ;D

Grunt running away from an ice cream truck with a dozen ice cream cones.

I don't even know if I can photoshop that!

What about what they do in Red Dead Redemption

Once you select a planet to land on, you're moved to the shuttle which is in flight. The flight will take about 2-3 minutes and in that time you can hear your squadmates speak.

Alternatively, you can just press a button to skip to the destination and bypass the entire ride.

Actually, thats not a bad idea either, kind of like a loading screen with shepard and his squadmates in the shuttle and you would either hear the news or hear the squadmates talk. It would be like the elevators but more interesting.

Indeed. Perhaps Shepard could even get involved in the conversation, or they could all talk about the news.

I would also like to get to know the unknown shuttle pilot.

That's a good idea too. However, that means if you decide to skip the dialogue, you won't be able to go back and hear it again (like the dialogue boxes on hub worlds in Mass Effect 2).
