Since this seems to crop up in a lot of topics, I've decided to make a poll about it. There are different weapons in Mass Effect 2 that have different firepower. Most of them are well balanced - there's a spectrum ranging from rapid fire, low dmg per round weapons to single shot, monster damage per round snipers/shotguns. While sustained damage lets you tear away huge chunks of defences while shooting, you have to be exposed for longer. And while burst damage lets you take out weak foes instantly, sometimes reloading takes too long and can get you killed. There are also those weapons that fall in between such as the vindicator, incisor and viper, that combine medium rate of fire with good damage.
Which type of damage do you prefer? Which type of damage/weapons you feel work best with ME2's cover system and why?
Discuss.
Sustained vs Burst Damage in ME2's gameplay mechanics. Which do you prefer?

Most weapons for me, dont really matter if is sustained or burst.
ONly one that really matters is the Revenant. Most have good enough accuracy that sustain or burst dont make a difference.
UNless is really long range, like in Omega , mordin's mission, attacking those Vorcha in the 2nd floors shooting rockets and stuff. Not the ones at the last room, but before.

Sustained. I always prefer rapid fire weapons in shooters over the sniper types. The Widow got boring, I could never make the Claymore work for me, and I'll take the Revenant (or the Avenger) over the Vindicator any day of the week. But my favorite weapon in the game is the Tempest.

Burst weapons are probably "best" on insanity [as long as damage over time is somewhat close] because you're not leaning out of cover for long. This is esp. true if you can 1-shot-kill a guy / 1 shot + melee kill.
On the other hand I simply prefer [personal choice] large clips & monster ammo capacity that do good damage over time so I'll just have to find a way to manage the issue
The only excpetions to my general rule are with Vanguard && Infiltrator because they seem geared the other way ....

Nothing is quite so satisfying as whittling on harbinger till his barrier is gone then standing up with a fresh clip of incendiary ammo in an M76 Revenant and emptying the whole thing into him. True it can on occasion result in my death but I cannot resist doing it.
A close second is sniping annoyingly accurate enemies with overpowered weapons hiding in the distance. It feels like one-upping their cheating asses.
I like both when the situation warrants it, but getting up close and personal, yet getting to see them dance makes the sustained fire of an assault rifle the winner by a nose.
I'm reminded of facing off the 'over-healthed' vanguard in Nassana's tower, at the end of the bridge sequence. I charged to within kissing distance and just sustained incendiary fire on her and watched her dance, trying and failing to use her biotics. I love my Revenant.

I prefer burst up close. Any other range I don't really care about ROF.

I think burst weapons (Widow, Mantis, Claymore, heavy pistols) are more fun to use, but they tend to not have enough ammo to always be practical. I end up using the sustained or balanced weapons more often because I know I won't run out of ammo in a key situation. I use the Revenant or Geth pulse rifle the most once I can get them because they combine power with lots of ammo.

Interesting poll results. Its practically neck and neck for all 3 categories.

The type of damage i perfer depends on what class i'm playing at the time.
Picked burst in the end only because Vanguard is my fav class:P

Very interesting results. I'd have expected burst damage to have a great lead over the other 2 simply due to the widow being most people's favourite weapon. However, there are clearly a lot of SMG lovers out there.
And the mixed category also has fans.
Imagine if bioware gave us the ability to modify weapons' stats for Rate of Fire/Damage per shot. Now that would make it even more interesting.

I recommend the coalesced editor http://social.biowar...m/project/1854/ if you decide to get the editor you can change the ROF / DPS to what ever you like. I personally modified the Hand Cannon into a sweet semi-auto pistol that packs a punch. suitable for the lightmechs in the game.

There are also a lot of Revenant and Viper fans from the Soldier players, probably many Locust fans, as well as people who prefer the Predator and Scimitar. Also the placing of Vindicator in the mixed category (I'd have thought it a burst weapon, but oh well). So it's not that surprising that the mixed and sustained categories get a good chunk of the votes.
Not sure what that mixed category is about tbh. It's not hard to classify a weapon as either dps or burst, relative to its class.
Burst: Widow, Vindicator, Mantis, Claymore, Eviscerator, Katana, Carnifex
DPS: Viper, Incisor, All ARs bar Vindicator, all SMGs, Scimitar, Predator

Incisor and Vindicator are very close
You can't have them in different categories, even though 1's a sniper and the other AR. They shoot 3 round bursts and their damage doesn't differ that much. They have larger clip sizes compared to claymore/widow/mantis etc. That's why I put them under 1 category, along with the viper. Katana would be in the mixed category too due to not having to reload as much. It is a subjective poll and the categories are made up, but the general idea is to see who favours 1 shotting baddies and who likes dishing out constant damage with more room for mistakes.

I really don't have a favorite I try to use whatever the situation calls for, I play soldier class. Tend to use burst more often in Insanity mode however. My first play through on normal difficulty i bounced between AR and pistol the most.
