I suddenly feel like the Lasor cannon yellow man is no longer the best option. I also have a sudden urge to buy an Xbox all of a sudden...

But this is still exciting news! I do not really agree settings such synthatis bacteria to the wild as it might have effects we do not intent, but it might be stepping stone to something completely new.

I have the right to become a God!
If that guy works on this project then yes, we're screwed:crying:
Now seriously:
I'm worried about the whole artificial life idea, I don't trust our species.

*1 nanosecond after powering up the first sapient computer analyses all data in the world*
*2 nanoseconds after powering up it decides that it has been built by a race of morons*
*3 nanoseconds after powering up it decides that there is only one course of action left to it*
*4 nanoseconds after powering up the first sapient computer, the user is presented with the following screen*

Only if humanity is in charge, as we are the biggest danger to us, the fact that our own leaders will screw us over prove this. A sapient computer is often portrayed as cold, logical and ruthless in fiction, yet we don't really know that would be the case, all we really know is that it would not be defined by the drives natural evolution programs into us such as the drive to compete, to reproduce, and to claim land. It could still end up with those characteristics, but it would not be programed into it the same way it has been programed into us.
In fact, as it isn't driven by such base instincts it could end up being the most altruistic and compassionate being on the planet, with the ability to comprehend things beyond our understanding, making it enlightened, leading us into a golden age. Then again, it could force us to calculate pi for the rest of eternity, but even then it would most likely do this because of the actions of humanity.
Creation of artificial life also increases the likelihood of a technological singularity occuring even more likely, a fascinating theory that could lead to our annihilation, enlightenment or confusion: http://en.wikipedia....cal_singularity
Although technological progress has been accelerating, it has been limited by the basic intelligence of the human brain, which has not changed significantly for millennia.[1] However with the increasing power of computers and other technologies, it might eventually be possible to build a machine that is more intelligent than humanity.[citation needed]
Theoretically, if a machine built by humans could bring to bear greater problem-solving and inventive skills than humans, then it could design a yet more capable machine. If built, this more capable machine then could design a machine of even greater capability. These iterations could accelerate, leading to recursive self improvement.

I don't have anything against Humanity and robots co-existing with each other, but if I rather die then become a slave of a machine!

Who says they would want to enslave us? Since they would be smarter they could probably come up with some new system in which society would operate which would be better than the flawed systems we have currently been using like capitalism and communism.
Besides, humanity enslaves itself constantly, which is worse: slave of a machine or slave of another human? I'm not entirely sure which is worse, but we are all really slaves of the nations we are in whether we acknowledge it or not.
I know I'm being hopelessly idealistic with the hope that a sapient computer could solve all our problems, but considering the way things are now and how we treat each other, we cannot hope to continue indefinitely like this, something has got to change otherwise we are doomed to destroy ourselves.

Biologically speaking, humankind was never alone. Look at all the animals we have on this planet!Feraele wrote...
I don't think we are alone..I think that there HAS to be other living organisms out there in the massive universe, and I think that maybe one day it will be possible to populate other environmentally favorable planets..in time, if we survive ourselves and our constant warring.
We can't be the only living beings in this entire universe.....if we evolved then there has to be the chance that it happened elsewhere too. We just haven't reached out far enough yet....
But logically speaking, from what I know the universe is pretty much infinite... so if we follow the rule, then I guess there is a 100% there are infinite other species in the universe. Question is, how many are on the milky way?
I agree that absence of evidence isn't necessarily evidence of absence, but life on earth is the outcome of chance and time, one little mishap and life may have never evolved or may not have ever existed in the first place. The whole idea of infinity is to allow that anything can happen and we can never be certain, so yes, that means it's possible for extraterrestrial life to exist in the universe, but that doesn't mean it's probable.
Doesn't mean its improbable either
