hmm.. Couple of thoughts. Hard Freezes could be a product of driver, process, memory, or power.
First thing to try: Update your C++ runtime library to latest. http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en
Normally windows update should have done this for you but I've noticed some people on these forums aren't up to date with it.
For drivers, it sounds like you've used gateway to get the latest updates. I'll assume that's across the board (BIOS, Chipset, network) and not just video drivers.
Now for the video drivers you're running 17x. The thing about gaming laptops is the vendors do not keep up with the drivers as well as is sometimes needed for gaming - ironic given their market. It may be worth it to check out a website such as laptopvideo2go.com-- they are a community of people that modify the latest reference drivers from nvidia, ati, and others so laptops can utilize them. Installing the drivers from that community will net you the latest nvidia driver release, 191.07. (even beta's are modded and released if you're feeling frisky)
For process, you could use a utility like Process Explorer (task manager on steroids) taking care to recognize and validate the processes you're seeing. Removing fluff may help if there's a conflict.
You could verify vista's system files to make sure they have not been modified or corrupted. To do that, open up an elevated command prompt-- meaning "Run as Administrator" a command prompt. And type this in the box that comes up "sfc /scannow". See if it comes up and repairs anything
After that we get to memory. There is a possibility that memory is going bad though usually you'll get a BSOD for that. But you could test it to make sure using memtest86.
The other thing to check is power. Using a utility like CPU-Z you can check to make sure voltages aren't fluctuating away from nominal (i.e. a needed 5v is actually 4.67v). Voltage issues will almost always result in a hard freeze with no warning. You're computer may have come with some sort of monitoring tool. If not, Cpu-Z may do the trick. A failing Power Supply could cause this issue. So can overclocking incorrectly or too high.
Cheers,

check this post, might help but haven't tested it myself yet.

I'm having the same issues though, so worth a shot I suppose.
