I hate being that guy who asks "which is the l33t class so i canz pwn?"

I am trying to figure out which class I like better.  I have played in the first little bit of combat with soldier and vanguard, but the combat feels nothing like what I got used to as a soldier in ME1.  I barely used AR in ME1 until I started to realize I could use it and do some awesome things.

I kinda like both styles.  Vanguard has a unique style, and I had decided to go with that first.  Getting to charge into combat is fun...until your first enemy flies away, and 4 others are up on you and you die.  The soldier is what I picked up next, missing my assault rifle and AR.  However, first chance with the assault rifle, I feel like I'm not doing much.  I'm just shooting what feels like a puny machine gun.  I know guns and classes get better, but it just doesn't feel right at the beginning.

Does combat as a vanguard typically going to be "shoot with pistol at long range; charge with shotgun and kill first person, then hope you find cover before someone tears you apart?" Will soldier combat just always be "shoot this guy with best ammo type until dead.  If shielded, disruptor.  If armor or health, incendiary."?

If you're getting bored, you could try to jury-rig both into something different.

Methods include:
- Picking a different weapon for each class (like a Sniper Rifle for a Vanguard)
- Picking a different bonus power (Reave, Dominate, Energy Drain, etc.)
- Picking different class powers

People will say that certain powers might not be the best or even the most effective, but if you want to not level charge on your Vanguard, rock on. I picked Barrier as my bonus power on both Vanguard and Adept. Not because it's the most effective, I just really love bonus shield powers, which some people really hate.

You have basically distilled both classes into what they're good at. The way you have phrased it though makes it sound like you are fed up with both classes. There are always four others to explore, even if you don't want to go all the way to the end with them.

I've made two runs with a soldier.  I don't really remember much about the first. All I know is I took the revnant.

Last one, I wanted to play it differently,  so I went for headshots all the time. First, vindicator + mantis. Later on, vindicator + widow.
With level 4 of adrenaline rush, you can make two bursts with the vindicator in some unfortunate's head. No need to comment on the mantis or the widow. If your foes are persistent enough and get close, the scimitar works wonders.

Can't say much about the vanguard. I always ended up with exactly the same build. Inferno ammo, squad cryo, heavy charge and champion. Always neglecting pull and shockwave. I only change my bonus power (reave or energy drain)
Really fun class when your good enough to string charges. I'm not

With my Vanguard combat is usually:

-- Hang back until I figure out where cover is / bad guys are / etc.

-- Pick a good target to charge [one on a flank with cover nearby is great]

-- Shoot & melee target to death

-- Hop into cover

-- Wash & repeat

Note: I will sometimes use Reave to strip defenses / boost my HPs if I don't have a good charge target.

Also note: If you have issues with people flying away don't [totally] strip their defenses before you charge. That way they will be close enough to get a Shotty blast [and maybe a melee] to the face. Picking who to charge && when is the critical thing to whether you'll have fun with a Vanguard or not .... [Vanguard isn't fun for me unless you're on HC or Insanity where everyone has defenses initially]

Vanguards are a blast when you figure out the best playstyle, and you have some room to maneuver(and lowered by upgrade cooldown times). Vanguards have a steep learning curve, but once you start figuring them out then watch out. I have always taken the Sniper rifle bonus and used the Viper/Evis combo of weapons with use of Tempest for really upclose bursts. Squad cryo helps, and I also add Geth Shield improved for extra damage and shields. Love the Vanguard, once that is I figured out how to play, most cool to charge the Geth Colossus, and Scions and kill them up close, which is a blast on Insanity(which I just finished).

Soldier, meh, I haven't been able to play it enough to really know how it will do, it is too boring for me.

I played through soldier initially because that was my primary import character from ME1 - pretty straight forward. But if you want a challenge Vanguard is the way to go - especially on hardcore or insanity settings, tough but oh so rewarding after you level up. Combo powers are great, pull, shockwave, reave, combo with cryo ammo + sniper rifle bonus and a well timed charged - meh to the soldier class I say.

I started off with Sentinel (M E 2: drawn to both the Biotic+Tech specialties, and Tech Armor), like Vanguard more (M E 2: Shockwave = awesome biotic+ major ass kicking), and really love the fact that Soldier class = more guns for fighting+combat points (M E 1, M E 2).

Soldier class is excellent in M E 1 (because of the old weapons menu and specific upgrades+ammo upgrades) ... but Vanguard in M E 2 = beating the **** out of the opposing in-game A.I.. Wish there was a Soldier+Vanguard class (all of the guns + biotic power ups, like Shockwave+Throw...instead of just a shotgun and adrenaline rush).

I wish there was a Evolver (adaptive/copier) or Shape Shifting class (having the ability to change your style, powers, abilities, perks, etc) (should be a special ability for Specters or something).
Dude if Vanguard had AR's, and SNPR's...it'd be totally better, than just having a SMG and Shotgun.

I was originally perturb that I didnt have enough guns when I first started playing vanguard, but I shifted and started thinking a little more strategically, especially playing insanity. The overall result was extremely satisfying.  I've started a new character and am playing as an infiltrator but have never played as a sentinel.

Great advice.
I've been killed a couple of times because I've charged against a defenseless target and left him for dead. Wrong. I ended up being shot in the back....

Vanguards become a tad silly once you get the hang of them. There are a few situations where I think I'm breaking the map because I sweep through levels like a great biotic wind. If you're fast enough, some respawns points and map events won't trigger.

Some notable oddities I've had are:

On Miranda's loyalty mission, the last elevator spawns around 10 or so units. Charging in, cuts it down to 3; but the elevator closes on you once you're done, so no looting the battleground :P.

On recruiting Samara, you can kill Wesea before she clears the blocks away. This cuts off half a room of spawned units.

Finished both classes on Insanity.

In short, Soldier for easymode, Vanguard for fun.

Heightened Adrenaline Rush makes most encounters borderline trivial because it also allows you to run faster, making positioning a non-issue, not to mention effortless headshots in both, semi and full auto, if the weapon allows it.

Charge provides for a very dynamic and tactical gameplay. Charge-bugs are damn annoying though...

Vanguard is easier....in my view, I had to spend more time with soldier in insanity that a vanguard.

Charging is one of the most fun things in the game. The soldier is more versatile but not as fun to play.

I like both the soldier and vanguard. Both are fun. I think a lot of people think the soldier is boring because they just sit behind cover and shot one of their guns. However it's totally feasible to get close quarters with a soldier and blaze away with the revy or a shotgun. That really gets my adrenaline pumping because I don't get to recharge my shields like a vanguard does.

One combat class I played that I found surprisingly really fun and powerful on insanity is a sentinel with assault armor and a shotgun. You're basically a swat team officer who has biotics, gadgets and a shotgun to blaze away everyone. Also helps that it only takes 3 missions from when you board the Normandy to get your tech cooldown (If you have Kasumi). Sentinels also benefit from that extra biotic upgrade. They're a pure beast that you can respec in multiple ways if you get bored of a certain play style.

This.
Despite the vanguard's funfactor, the various bugs associated with charge can get pretty ****** annoying over time. Sometimes it simply won't lock for no apparent reason, other times you try to charge and it's as though it gets 'interrupted' somehow and you find your skills are recharging but your backwardass Shep is just standing there like a putz catching bullets. Not to mention those times where charging ****s up your camera and movement and you suddenly can't turn left or right anymore, ****ing infuriating.
Oh jesus, just when you think you've put something behind you.

as much as i absolutely love the revenanat and as much as ill never forget my soldier insanity run once i got my hands on the rev, the vanguards is a million times better. take the sniper rifle, and you dont need to play any other class. youve got every level of weaponry, ammo mods, sweet biotics and the best ability in the game, charge. for charge alone, id recommend the vanguard over every other class. it just doesnt get old, and the times i glitch my charge when it doesnt work just makes it that much more exciting.

My first playthrough was as a Vanguard using the charge + shotgun play style, but now I am doing the game again with a Soldier and I am finding the soldier much more satisfying to play because there is just enough of a degree of skill involved to keep me interested.

I just feel very locked-in whenever I play a Vanguard because honestly, it's a one trick pony. Fun, but very repetitive after a while.

I've never been that big a fan of the Vanguard's set of talents. Cryo Ammo is annoying, the Vanguard doesn't handle Shockwave's cooldown all that well, and most the time I get bored of the Vanguard by the third recruitment mission, simply down to the fact that the Vanguard essentially becomes a one-trick pony at that stage. Inferno on, shotgun out, charge charge charge.

I do agree the Viper is an excellent addition to the Vanguard's repertoire, though.
