I was wondering just how useful this spell is, against tougher enemies like bosses?  Would it get resisted more than any other similar spell that would pin an enemy in place or would talent points be better spent elsewhere?  If I already use cone of cold and crushing prison, is petrify overkill?  Would I be able to use petrify against the archdemon?

Petrify is quite useful - espeicially for AW's who can cast it without having to shethe weapons. I always use it to target enemy mages followed by a Stonefist to shatter them. How effective Petrify is will depend on your mage's Spellpower compared to the target's Nature resistance and level?? I don't recall being able to petrify the AD. Although, I was able to petrify other dragons.

It is a physical resistance check. I find that none of the CC spells work that great on Bosses.

Cone of Cold always works with me, I froze Broodmother, High Dragon, Flemeth, and the Archdemon 4/5 times. It just does not last nearly as long as Petrify. But if youre tank is being mauled by the boss it unfreezes faster and so escapes. Cone of Cold is a must for any mage.

Petrify is kind of a poor man's Cone of Cold, but it does sometimes work even on the Archdemon. Not for long, though. I think the Elite Boss tag gives a hefty spell resistance.

That and all of the hold type spells are adjusted by the rank of the target. I think bosses are only held for 2.5 seconds for every 10 seconds.

I have had reasonable success with it, but it only really achieves an all too brief rest. I find the lesser spells in that line more valuable.

Cone of cold is a favorite of mine. I'm pretty much looking for another cone of cold for when I'm either waiting on recast or I want to freeze a second target. Crushing prison is also nice, and a great mage killer, though it's usually a once per battle kind of spell with the long recast.

With one mage, you can get a pretty good pattern going against bosses of Cone of Cold - attack until unfrozen - Petrify - attack until unpetrified - Glyph of Paralysis - attack - back to Cone of Cold. Even better with two mages, as that will cover those times when the boss outright resists.

So many useful spells, so many decisions...

Part of the draw for playing a warrior for me was that it was simple and hard to screw up...lol.

Plenty of good spells around.

I always kill Mages with Mana Clash. The first 2 spells of that line are utter crap, but I love having Storm of the Century, so thats slot 3. Then Mana Clash is only one more slot, and it does devastating damage to all white mages, and hurts yellow and orange mages at least a lot.

Now that you can no longer  shatter elites and bosses  (thanks to patch 1.03), I'd say Petrify is not worth its tier 4 ranking.     You'll get the same   "hold" effect with Glyph of Paralization, which is teir 1.  And cone of cold and crushing prison at least do damage.

I kind of agree with this. Petrify is pretty crap for a tier 4 spell. OTOH, the first two spells in the line are good, and Earthquake is OK, and Petrify is sometimes handy. If you have two spells left after you have everything you want, Earthquake and Petrify aren't bad.

Cone of Cold is bugged is why it always seem to work. Petrify is actually not that great. The only great thing is to set up shatter combos. I get it on my CC Mage because I have no other useful spells to get. If you want something for bosses, go for Glyph of Paralysis. It's pretty great, and there is no prerequisite talents needed.

The Glyph of Paralysis + Glyph of Repulsion combo is a fool proof freeze. No one can resist it. Has a big area of effect, but with a little practise you can get hit it just right.

But overall petrify is not amazing, but it is not pure crap either. Just an OK spell.

^ Plus you don't even have to be in the same room to cast it in an adjacent area. This allows you to preemptively use explosion paralysis without fear of friendly fire. Makes most Nightmare encounters trivial.

ya i dont use the glyphs in combination because it makes the game kind of easy though this one mage in the sacred ashes temple paralyzed leliana on our repulsion glyph and wiped us once lol.

shattering i do now, but when you could shatter yellows it was overpowered lol.

overall i dont think petrify is worth 4 points and the "earth" tree is pretty lackluster, so i usually avoid it.

rock armor; worse than arcane shield

stonefist; pretty solid early game kind of pointless late game cus white mobs die so quick anyways no point in shattering them.

earthquake; lol this spell is very bad imo

petrify; never used, but a single target cone of cold effect doesn't sound great to me

if i ever want to cc a boss i usually cone of cold into a force field idk the success rate on misdirection hex but it would be great versus bosses as well if it has a good success rate.
