Dwarfs and Swords???? Why???

I don't get it. Not even in D&D are all dwarfs the same- in Dark Sun, a published D&D setting back during AD&D (and that I believe is getting new corebooks next year for 4E?- Woo!) dwarves have no hair at all, meaning no beards, for instance. Jumping back to Forgotten Realms, a lot of dwarf rogues used longswords to honor their patron Vergadain (or daggers, for Abbathor), and other members of the panthon also used other weapons (I remember a greatsword, a whip, a gauntlet...).
Isn't the complaint sort of silly, anyway? To be blunt, it would be like someone latching on to Twilight, and then reading a vampire book and freaking out about how the vampire's don't sparkle in the sun. Despite the fact that there have been many other vampire tales (including the 'original' ones) and that this new book has nothing what-so-ever to do with Meyer's work. That's really what you're doing: 'Vampire's should sparkle because Meyer's books said they do, screw Stroker and Rice and everyone else and the fact that this book has no relation to Twilight!' 'Dwarves should not use long swords because D&D Dwarves don't use longswords (which is also untrue), despite Dragon Age work not being D&D and dwarves existing in literature and mythology with longswords just fine!'
I mean, you can stand here and state it. None of us can stop you. But... what's the point? Why do you want to?

In my opinion there is a good reason why dwarves usually prefer other weapons to swords.
For a most kind of swords weapons you need a good dexterty in order to do the stuff that makes swords really usefull.
A axe or a hammer is more dependent on strength to do damage.
The usuall fantasy dwarf (and the Dragon Age dwarfs look like usuall fantasy dwarves) is stronger then a human, but not as fast and nimble.
So using a axe or hammer is more advantages for dwarf.
I never tried fighting with an axe (I only have some experiance with swords) but I think axes or a warhammer got a slight advantage in tunnels because the need a bit less room to be effective.

Dwarfs in this game ****** me off. What’s the deal with all the dwarfs in this game using Long swords.
Really, Long swords. I understand you’re trying to make your own lore but come on. This is something that should not be changed. Dwarfs live underground. They have no use for swords. Hammers and axes yes but not swords. I always play dwarfs in RTS and in PnP DnD. And I must admit this alone almost caused me to quit this game. Also the fact that I got kicked out of my home town and my father gives me a sword, REALLY A SWORD! Were the hell is the family legacy hammer that my ancestors used to smite some old school evil. Nope they all used swords because everyone else in the world uses swords.
I want a Dwarf using a freaking battle hammer and a large steel shield. But yet I’m forced into using a sword and shield. Where are all the other types of weapons? I have yet to see a battle hammer, hammer, maul, mace, axe, or morning stars drop or be sold I have yet to see any 2h axes, or hammers either. Why are we forced into using swords as a dwarf?

Not so hard to poke with a sword.
Down with hammers and axes.

One of the complaints was that axes are for cutting wood for fires etc...
Um and where would Dwarves get this wood from? Most fantasy has Dwarves using glowing fluids either from glow stones, or fungus, or glow worms for lighting. And usually burning mold and such.
Hammers, Picks, and Polearms make the most sense for any underground civilization for utility and defense. Swords go there too depending if they are pokey or slashy types.
For what it's worth one of the very first drops I had was a dwarven axe. I believe shortly after that I had a hammer of some sort, but I prefered the dual wielding properties of my daggers and sold the items.

I would have to agree to a extent, that the game wants you to use swords more so than any other type.
So true. Swords do the most damage in this game
I would love to see a warhammer. But im starting to think Bioware never made them..Because they want every one to use swords.
